I like 550 paracord, not the cheap sports store stuff, the good stuff from a kit shop. Great for tying toes and thumbs together.

In natural fiber, the first question is...

Do you like to suffer? Are you a masochist? Does the idea of the rope biting in turn you on?

If so, jute is your friend. My personal preference when it comes to tying is for this rope. Particularly for suspension use and fast- paced demos or when teaching classes where I need to repeat a tie. It's lightweight, can be pulled across the skin VERY rapidly before inducing rope burn... and just all around is a pleasure to tie with. My recommendaiton for the best Jute rope I've found is www.bindme.nl - Marrow lives in the Netherlands, but it's worth the wait for his rope.

If you like softer, gentler rope, Hemp is your friend.
Best price around on hemp is a bulk roll of 6mm hemp from www.turkeyfoot.llc - at $80 for over 400 feet of rope, it's tough to pass up. Beware that fresh hemp rope will shed like a cat in the spring, so expect to end up a little bit... fuzzy. But it breaks in very soft and sensual after a few uses. You can also buy processed hemp from someone like Twisted Monk that's been de-furred and is ready to tie with.

A 6mm (1/4") rope is the cast-iron standard in the Shibari rope world. Authentic Kinbaku uses one length of rope for all of their ties, and it's 3-4 times the rigger's armspan, depending on their personal preferences. Mine are all the most common size, at 8 meters (26.25ft) in length.
