I have bipolar disorder and I tend to have long, drawn-out depressive episodes in the winter, so I suppose that's very similar to SAD. It becomes very tiring to have to always be adjusting my medication, and I don't much like the idea of relying entirely on a pill (or several different kinds of pills at once, all to counteract the side effects of the others ugh ugh), so I've been trying to make a habit of coming up with other methods of alleviating my depression. Getting out of the house is definitely a big one. Wallowing is never good. If you find that you have social anxiety, try going somewhere a little quieter- a small bookstore, maybe just for a walk, etc. Seeing friends is important as well, though. I find that without human contact, I end up festering a lot and that's definitely not a good thing for depression. Even if it's just inviting a couple friends over for a movie night. That will also give you a good excuse to clean, if you're like me and end up letting everything get pretty messy and grody when you're depressed. Speaking of cleaning, it's a big help to keep things neat and bright in your house, as your environment tends to have a big impact on what the inside of your head looks like (just from my experience, I'm no professional or anything.) Having plants to water and take care of is also nice. Something that always makes me feel better is cooking a nice healthy meal where I have to chop up a lot of veggies and stuff. If it's sunny, brave the cold for a bit every day to let the sun get on your face and soak in and stuff, sunlight is nice and wonderful. When in doubt, make some hot chocolate and curl up with a good book. That's my go-to option when there's just too much goshdern cold-ass snow outside and it won't go away.
