I rule! [sm=banana.gif]

Therefore I take exception to that.

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

I don't want to come over all medication boy, but you've got that slightly wrong.
Anglo Saxon started as a Germanic language, and Latin had very little (if any) influence on that. Medieval French was a more significant influence (though it tended not to mix that much with Saxon for class reasons: the French aristocracy spoke French and the serfs spoke Saxon).
Modern English (or even middle English) is a far more recent development, and is distinguished by the fact that it's dumped all of the rigid grammatical rules (mostly to do with tenses and genders) that mark the other Germanic languages. You wouldn't have a prayer of getting through Beowulf in the Anglo Saxon without a lexicon, but you could take a fair crack at Piers Ploughman or The Canterbury Tales in Middle English.
To refer to the point I made in my earlier post: most contemporary Germanic languages are spoken like R&B in rigid twelve bars, while modern English is free jazz. More flux, more flexibility, more definition by context rather than word order or a dozen different endings to the same noun or verb.

I would assume it would be the saxon that is germanic, cuz old norse is old norse and by god I dont see that as a germanic language whatsoever.

Heingst und Horsa were not herring chokers.

Northri, Suthri, Aestri, Westri, waft, warp, woof, and so on. Monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday (should have been called washing day like the original)

Moonhead -> RE: There's A New Party Running in 2012 (1/11/2012 1:19:00 PM)

Yep. That was sort of my point to Marc: modern English has a Germanic lineage, but it isn't a Germanic language in any meaningful sense beyond the historic. That's the main reason it's so bloody difficult for somebody who wasn't raised as a native speaker to learn.

(Old Norse does at least use similar tenses and genders to modern German. We don't.)

Exactly.  So what are we arguing about?  My quip about English just being German etc, was just that... a quip... not meant to be taken as a serious scholarly proposal.

ETA:  kinda like: "Nobody speaks the Queen's English except the Queen... and she's German."

mnottertail -> RE: There's A New Party Running in 2012 (1/11/2012 1:24:33 PM)

Yeah, but I think that comes from the danish end of the norse, cuz they speak norwegian in german is about as best as I can come up with it, I am sure they invented the phrase, "Heil Hitler" and   and danelaw.   For some reason it all got to be called Dane.

Aumlach was Hamlet, and Atli was Atilla, and U Thant is still U Thant, and Dag Hammerskjold is still.........ah, you get the drift.......

Not a problem.

Ya know, the only reason I like the vid is because the guy has the ability to poke fun at himself (that is, Canada) as well (clubbing seals, lumberjack fashions)as the U.S.  I regard self denegrating humor as an advanced trait (if you can't laugh at yourself you have no business laughing at anyone else).  Had this vid not demonstrated some self denigrating humor I would have dismissed it as just another example of human bigotry.

A good point. Humour can excuse an awful lot, when it isn't just used as something else to ridicule other people with.

Some of their tweets
Every time you vote for #Santorum, an angel gets his wings, then makes out with a dude.
Campaign promise: We'll build the Keystone pipeline, but it will carry maple syrup. If there's a spill, at least the animals will be tasty.
Prediction for New Hampshire: Gingrich softens on gay rights, says they should be allowed to divorce all they want.
Apologies to #MicheleBachmann for scaring her out of the race on our first day. Is it legal to abort a campaign in Iowa?

Btw The guy who created the vid is a US marine.
I didnt want to post it as fact but now there is a link to a site with more info
