http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/01/09/panetta-admits-iran-not-developing-nukes/

Sunday, on CBS's Face the Nation, Panetta admitted that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, but is pursuing a "nuclear capability".  Panetta admitted that capability falls in line with what Iran has been claiming for years--they are developing nuclear energy.

Personally, I think Iran would be better off developing solar energy.  In that climate, it would be abundant, clean, no waste, little hassle.  Cheap, too, after the initial cost of setting up the system.

Does this admission leave all those calling for pre-emptive strikes on Iran with major egg on their chins? ..... OR .....
Does this admission leave all those calling for pre-emptive strikes on Iran with lots of egg on their chins?

Panetta is always the spoiler.

Just like when he tattled on cheney taking over the command center and allowing them to blow the pentagon.

So despite Iran telling us that theyre developing nuclear weapons...

And your premise is deeply flawed - from your own article, Leon Pannetta:

quote:

“I think the pressure of the sanctions, the diplomatic pressures from everywhere, Europe, the United States, elsewhere, it’s working to put pressure on them,” Panetta explained on Sunday. “To make them understand that they cannot continue to do what they’re doing. Are they trying to develop a nuclear weapon? No. But we know that they’re trying to develop a nuclear capability, and that’s what concerns us. And our red line to Iran is, do not develop a nuclear weapon. That’s a red line for us.”

Credible news articles abound detailing all of the efforts that Iran is making toward obtaining nuclear capabilities, and again, Irans leaders openly brag about their plans

For the people just joining the debate, I've noticed some confusion regarding commonly used terms:

"CAPABILITY" is not "INTENT".

For example, the United States is CAPABLE of destroying every other nation in the world with nuclear weapons.

To suggest that the US has such an INTENT is laughable.

Thank you for your attention.

In the context of Iran, there is no INTENT to develop nuclear weapons, otherwise they would have withdrawn from the Non-proliferation treaty.

Iran plans to use conventional weapons to carry out their declared INTENT to wipe Israel off the map, then?

Headlines are often not (and in fact usually not) a recapitulation of the content.

To recapitulate our progress so far.

You made a claim.

I requested a citation to support that claim.

You CHOSE to not supply the citation to support your claim, making an unrelated statement, presumably in hopes of distracting from the outstanding request. This implies that you are in fact unable to support your claim.

Your claim is duly recorded to be unsupported at your own choice.

That's all we need. We've established yet another data point to assess your veracity, or lack thereof.

Thank you for playing!

I am sure we can all at least agree that Iran has such a robust nuclear energy program because its such an energy poor nation...

Ironically, in spite of the fact that they are sitting on a huge oil deposit, they lack the ability to refine enough to meet their own needs.

Citation supplied http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Iranian_Oil_Refining_and_Distribution_Company

A quote: In 2008 Iran has imported nearly 40% of its market needs because of lack of refining capacity and contraband.[10] In 2009, Iran spent paid $11 billion on imported fuel.[11] In 2010, gasoline import declined to 30% of its market needs at 25 million liters of gasoline and 11 million liters of diesel fuel per day.[12][13]

As of July 2010, Iran produces between 280,000 barrels (45,000 m3) and 285,000 barrels (45,300 m3) of gasoline a day and until recently had acquired the remaining 30 percent, which is about 115,000 barrels per day (18,300 m3/d) to 120,000 barrels per day (19,000 m3/d), through big oil companies.[14]

Major gasoline suppliers to Iran historically have been India, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, France, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates.[15][1

Burning oil is stupid, and only stupid people advocate for it when we have so many feasible alternatives.

Once you've burned up all the oil, what are you planning on making tupperware out of?

And everyone knows that its much cheaper for Iran to build a sophisticated nuclear program than to build a few oil refineries, even including the international sanctions etc

Right, sure... we have feasible alternatives just shooting right out of our assholes...

And theres a severe shortage of oil in Iran, too

Everyone knows that

Nice attempt at strawmanning. I didn't say that. I said they don't have (at this time) the means (probably thru poor planning) to meet their own energy needs after you had claimed otherwise. Then, I backed it up with citations which is something you tend not to do.

Given that they'd be a lot less likely to cover their own country with fallout by doing that, yes, they probably would.

Quite right. And that is one of many reasons they are doing that.
