Is throwing them in jail wrong?

Nope, not if they want to drive their buggies on those new-fangled paved roads.

If they don't want those orange saftey markers then fuck 'em!
After a few years there'll be fewer of them.

I agree. A friend of mine who was driving a semi was barely able to slow down in time to avoid a catastrophe. These Amish are putting everyone on the road in danger, not just themselves. Just hitting a deer can cause major damage. I can only imagine what hitting a horse and buggy would be like. IMO, people have a right to follow their religious beliefs as long as those beliefs don't endanger others.

BenevolentM -> RE: safety vs religion (1/12/2012 12:14:06 AM)

In response to post http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3992047

I personally have always felt those orange triangles were God awful ugly. I can't blame them for not liking it. They are an obvious road hazard, however. Having read the article, if I were a member of a state legislature, I would vote to allow them to use gray reflective tape instead. A sensible compromise would be to increase the width of the strip of tape to say the width of the carriage. They would have a larger reflector that way which would enhance public safety with improved aesthetics. Everyone would win. If they are willing to accept gray reflective tape I say go for it. They might even go for covering the entire outline of the carriage in gray reflective tape which would be even better. If you are worried about them being a road hazard this seems to be the way to see something useful done.

I originally sent Kirata my suggestion. He recommended that I post what I sent him.

From what I understand, the Amish are doing exceedingly well. They are expanding and have started cultivating new colonies.

I see the Amish all over Erie County, even in the city.  Last summer the house across the street from where I work even had some work done--the workers were Amish.  IMO, the Amish want to remain separate from the rest of society, to be given special privileges because of their religious beliefs; one the other hand, they want to be a part of our society, to use the roads and police that we all pay for.  They want it both ways in many cases.

Has anybody seen those electric "fireplaces" the Amish have been selling the past few years.  Nothing more than a portable electric heater really, and the Amish are charging a few hundred dollars for them.

I dont know what amish you are talking about but certainly not the amish I know.

They want nothing to do with this corrupt gubafia system on any level.

The right to travel is in fact the right to travel or do we suggest they are all confined to the land they own?

How do you or anyone else expect them to travel but by public common ways?   Can we expect them to travel over everyones private property ruining crops and what not?  That is the purpose of the common way that everyone can use it.

That and they have to shoe horses that run on blacktop, that hard surface does them no favors but causes more work.

They DO have the right to travel just like you, (which has nothing to do with the commercial enterprise of "driving" for those who know and understand federal law, however they need to understand it is after all a shared common way and safety cannot be ignored.

the real problem here is that society at large shit on these people and all people of religion particulars.

Hell they even have bicycle paths but nothing has been done to respect the first amendment.

They do have that right. And the rest of us have a certain expectation of having the right to be safe as we travel as well.

They do not have the right to ignore the law. If they dont like it, then get it changed. But because you want to live a life thats simple and pious doesnt mean my life has to be at risk for you to do so.

Moonhead -> RE: safety vs religion (1/12/2012 8:27:32 AM)

This.

If they don't want to add warning markers to their buggies, maybe they can set up some sort of emergency fund to pay for any medical treatment or wrecked vehicles somebody who drives into the stupid things can be paid off with.
It isn't like the self righteous luddite tosspots couldn't afford to do that, after all.

Fornica -> RE: safety vs religion (1/12/2012 8:48:10 AM)

I love the well researched facts in this article..this is my fave:
"Collisions of motor vehicles with Amish buggies are often fatal. In November, a teenager using a harness-type horse carriage was killed in central Kentucky when he was struck from behind by an SUV. The buggy did not have a reflective triangle, though the family was not a part of the Swartzentruber order. Several other fatal collisions with Amish buggies happened in the U.S. last year, though it's not clear in each case whether reflective triangles were used."

I'm sorry, but what happened to being responsible for being in control of your vehicle at all times? Every time I have seen an Amish horse and buggy they have kept far to the right to enable those in motor vehicles to pass. How fast are these drivers going that they don't have the time to react safely?

Hillwilliam -> RE: safety vs religion (1/12/2012 9:09:44 AM)

Night time, Black Buggy, non local driver that isn't used to looking for a horse and buggy on the highway...............recipe for tragedy.

Jeez folks, do ya always have to work that stuff in?

Perhaps it may be necessary to state the general case that unilluminated black objects are difficult to see at night, lest someone suspect you of being an Amish shill who is just making shit up.

As drivers, we are conditioned, especially as dusk approaches, to look for lights, head and tail lights. Coming around a bend, you wont see these buggies until you are on top of them. Wont matter how far to the right they are. If you dont know they are there, you will hit them. Just how fast to you think the car needs to be going before someone will be killed or major damage to property occurs,

"They consider it garish and believe they should rely on God, not symbols, for protection on the highway."

If God wanted to protect the Amish, he wouldn't have made them look such tits, would he?
