Oh for crap's sake....really? I can honestly see how this will encourage my cookie buying, I hope the sons will appreciate the deluge of cookies coming their way in care packages cuz I can't keep em here- they'll all be gone.

You know, i don't agree there should be a boycott of cookies for this subject, but on some level PART of what is being spoken about is something i can see girls and parents being concerned about.  Now do i agree that transgender boys should not be denied access to being part of the girl scouts, IF his life is lived FULLY as a girl and when the age they are allowed to start the hormones is done.  I don't agree they should be allowed to remain as part of the girl scouts if the parents allow him to develope biologically through puberty as a boy.  Sorry, but if the parents of that boy can't bring themselves to allow that boy full access to becoming a woman meaning they allow him to do everything to become a woman -- then why should other parents HAVE accept him as a girl, when his own parents don't?

Sorry but i can see where people are thinking when the girls believe one thing and then find out there is a boy amongst them can be disconcerting. 

I wouldn't be pissed there was a transgender boy among the  girls, i would be pissed that people took MY ability to make informed choices for MY daughter out of MY hands because they felt the choice of the transgender's boy's parents was more important than my own for my daughter.

Yeah, rah rah, you have a boy/girl wanting to live as the opposite gender, however, if by doing so they are secret and taking away the choices of others because they keep it secret -- sorry that doesn't wash with me.

Yeah, i would be really irritated that someone decided to take away MY choice of making a determination with full disclosure. 

Yes, i know it can be scary and dangerous for transgenders but if they want acceptance to me being secret about it and taking away the ability of others to make decisions based on full disclosure -- isn't the way to gain acceptance.

Gays are doing it, they have finally realized that full disclosure is the way to gain acceptance -- yes there will be people who leave or discriminate, but more and more people accept gays and i fully believe because of the full disclosure and being proud and accepting of themselves that allow others to accept them.

I wouldn't say that hormone if dangerous to that particular kid would be part of the access he has then to becoming a woman.   There is a difference between parents saying no you can't because its dangerous and parents saying well why don't you wait until you are 18 and you can make the decision then.    To me, the concept of the drugs being dangerous means that that option isn't part of the access he has.  However, the parents being uncertain its the right thing to do -- to me -- means the kid needs to adhere to that choice and full disclosure when he wants to be part of a girls team etc.  Just like say, a girl wanting to be a part of the boys football teams and all the controversy that causes. 

To me, that is not fully accepting and that they are believing HE MIGHT change his mind.  To me, then he needs to be seen as a boy in terms of concepts like say -- girl scouts or girl teams at schools etc.    Is it fun for him no, but that is a choice his parents are making FOR him.   In this same way, the parents of the girls in the troops want to make their choices FOR their children.

Either way, i still believe full disclosure to the troop parents at the very least should be done.

What you are forgetting angel is that the issue of being TG is more than physical. These people are mentally and psychologically the opposite gender. It's not like they think it would be fun to dress and act the opposite gender, they feel the opposite gender. From what I've read in the posts by TGs here on CM, that doesn't change just because puberty sets in. So taking hormones or not, these "boys" aren't thinking as members of the male gender, they are thinking as females.

ETA: of course there needs to be full disclosure, how else would they explain a boy wanting to join?

Sorry but the world doesn't revolve around transgender kids who want to be the opposite sex.  They have to learn to live within life and if they feel they should be allowed to enter girl scouts then they need to fight for it as much as a non-transgender girl wanting to be in boys football.   That is a decision HIS parents are making for him and they have to deal with the consequences of that.

If the parents aren't going to allow the full transformation to begin when applicable while that child is a child, then it's not right to expect others to accept that child as the opposite gender free and clear and his gender is decided for him by his parents and their saying NO.    That is something his parents need to recognize by disallowing him access does.

Why should others HAVE to accept him as a girl when his own parent's decision isn't accepting him as a girl?  We all have to and had to live with decisions made for us by our parents.  Transgender kids do also.   I am not saying he has to stop portraying himself as what he believes, i am saying if his parents make the determination he will grow as a boy physically and have to wait until he is 18 to start his physical transformation, then that is what he will have to deal with as a child.

According to the girl scouts, the child has to be living as a girl and if that is the case, what is the problem? There is still a lot of controversy on the best surgery for this, and I know adults who are still going over all the options and deciding exactly what they want to do. But you expect a child to have to make this decision so you can be 100% sure that they really want to live as girls? Sorry, but that sounds a bit excessive to me. If the child and family say she lives as a girl, I am not going to concern myself as to whether or not they have a penis. I know to many preop transgenders and to me that would be saying they can't present that way because they haven't finished the surgerys.

Who says the world revolves around them? To turn your last question around, why should SHE - yes she - have to take hormones and/or have surgery just to prove that they do in fact identify as the gender opposite the one they were born as? It's not a portrayal, physical aspects are only part of it. TGs literally feel female, their identity as such isn't a matter of dressup, it feels like nature made a mistake and made them the wrong gender.

I have a close friend whose teenage daughter is going through the process of becoming a boy. This is a child who I have know since they were about 5 years old. The child has struggled with gender identity for a very long time - but has always felt like a boy. When I think of my friend's child, even at 7, they knew "she" was really more of a "he". As a girl, he went through a "lesbian" stage, but then realized that what he really wanted was to be male. He has a very difficult road ahead of him. While most in his high school have been supportive, there are, of course, always the haters who simply cannot accept him for who he is. It is impossible for me to read this Girl Scout cookie story and not think of my friend's child.

Hormone therapy cannot really begin until a child is closer to puberty, but I see nothing wrong with the Girl Scouts accepting a boy who really feels they should be a girl even though the child is not yet on the medical path to becoming a girl. Obviously this is not an easily socially acceptable path for a boy to take - this is not a boy just trying to enter Girl Scouts to be silly. He is also not trying to do it to make some comment on how Girl Scouts discriminate against boys. This boy genuinely feels he is a girl. And I personally know a young woman who has since a young age felt she was really a boy. The feelings are genuine.

I applaud the Girl Scouts for being inclusive in this way. Gender is complicated. I understand excluding boys who are boys, but a boy who is a girl is something else entirely.

My friend's daughter, who is now her son, is of no danger to other boys. This 7 year old boy is of no danger to other girls. In a supervised Girl Scouts' meeting what is it that people think this 7 year old could possibly do. He wants to be and be treated as a girl. He is not a boy in the way we traditionally define the gender. All of the positive things that are mentioned about self-esteem and girls apply even more-so to this boy as he faces the challenge of transitioning. And I am quite sure this boy would not "fit in" with Boy Scouts - can you even begin to imagine how other boys would bully him? Doesn't this child have enough going on that he doesn't need to have a national boycott of cookies just because the local Girl Scouts' chapter is enlightened enough to admit him?

I will not be buying Girl Scout cookies because my waistline can't handle them, but I will make a donation to my local Girl Scout chapter. Girls are girls, and need support - whether they started their lives with a vagina or not.
