Most runway models meet the BMI criteria for anorexia', claims plus-size magazine in powerful comment on body image in the fashion industry
A magazine dedicated to plus-size fashion and models has sparked controversy with a feature claiming that most runway models meet the Body Mass Index criteria for anorexia.
Accompanied by a bold shoot that sees a nude plus-size model posing alongside a skinny 'straight-size' model, PLUS Model Magazine says it aims to encourage plus-size consumers to pressure retailers to better cater to them, and stop promoting a skinny ideal.
Size 12 (U.S.) model Katya Zharkova, 28, stars in the shoot, which has a powerful statistic accompanying each image.

This model is a size 12
now look at her compared to a "runway model"

It's so difficult. I know it's cliche to say it, but the impact these images have on the psyche of young females I truly believe is underestimated. I'm 26, have suffered from disordered eating and even though I'm "cured" on it now, psychologically when I see thin models, I can't help but think "I wish it was me."

I really feel sorry for girls that are 10-12 years old now seeing all of this. That, coupled with maturing earlier, increased social pressures... etc. Ugh, so not having children!!!

Really?  Cuz ALL my life I have not liked girls that don't have curves, Twiggy was twiggy.  I don't care for morbidly obese, but the big girl hugging the little girl is more the way of life in my world.  I can't see that stick as looking beautiful.

I think thats kinda the point tho Ron
My daughter who is 25 looked at the top pic and said, how can she go nekid, look at the difference
when I pointed out that she was only a size 12 she was horrified.
My daughter is a size 12.
Its not what men think that is important, its not even what most women think, its all about the dollar and what people DONT wanna see

For reals.

What makes me crazy is that you almost never see REALLY plus sized people modelling plus sized clothing. You see average sized women modelling the average sized clothing that has been "enlarged" for the plus market.

When I was selliing fetishwear I was never able to properly fit anyone larger than a 2X regardless of what the tag said. Those measurement charts tell the real tale!

I'm pretty sure that Igigi uses real, plus-sized models but there aren't many others that do.

I hate to rain on the parade, but advertising is about catering to self-image, i.e, plus sized women may not prefer to think of themselves as plus sized women, but as women who would like to find nice clothes in their size, so it really doesn't matter what the model looks like.

I mean really, I'd like to think of myself as a charming, witty, devilishly handsome rouge like I see on television, instead the hideous, socially dysfunctional troll I am, and advertising allows me to believe I can become that if I purchase their product.

They sell fantasy, wear this, you'll look like this, doesn't matter if it makes you happy.

I love the Old Spice commercials BTW, they just lay it out for you - they got nothing to lose old Spice is like so 1965, they're not going to make their image any less retro than it is, so they go for the laughs, and it works, but Calvin Klein is not going to mess with success.

Realistically, I'm all into thick chicks, love a big fat ass, big, meaty thighs -  the chicks the younger guys go for look like adolescents to me, I wasn't that into adolescents when I was an adolescent.

But, it's not going to change anytime soon, there is a feedback loop at work here, a youth obsession, that feeds on itself, the models wills get younger and skinnier, if it's possible, until someone liek the chick that played Ally McBeal comes along who is so disturbingly corpselike that we have to temporarily come back to our senses for a while, then it will gradually slip back into the spiral.

So, just enjoy who you are, it's all good, those boney chicks aren't that great in bed, their energy levels are too low, being malnourished, feint and dizzy with hunger.

I was checking out a plus size lingerie site (yes I dig plush women, it was purely a boneriffic moment) and those models were smaller than I am and I do not shop in the plus department! hmph.

hmmmmmm the issue is that fat women dont exist as a market..clothes dont fit.. they look nothing like the "model" quelle surprise.. anger and wanting to be skinny enough to look"half way decent" is not being catered to.
Reality would gain them more dollars..look at the obesity issue, how many cater to it??
The diet industry is killing and maiming mentally and physcially as badly as the fashion industry.
IM not disagreeing with you so much as looking at it FROM a fat chicks point of view, I sell lingerie and fetish clothing. VERY Few sell above a size 16. They are like hens teeth.
The market is growing but the acceptance of fat advertising is far from it.

Haute couture is always going to be about heroin chic, one of my theories is that advertising models represent the ideal of advertising executives and movie producers. Feminine images in hip hop marketing are a little more realistic.

Say what you will about Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men is one of the only shows with fat chicks in it, although they are comediennes. Even America Ferrera started getting gradually thinner and more conventionally pretty once she could afford personal trainers, makeup artists, and the whole lifestyle, i.e., the classic "ugly duckling" fantasy.

It's a weird country, and getting weirder, there were probably only a a couple hundred plastic surgeons in the country when I was a kid, now there are probably more plastic surgeons than GP's.

And my BMI number says I'm grossly obese, and should have died from six difderent kinds of heart disease. BMI's are a goddamn joke.

BMI's are a Victorian crock. I have a large frame, and frame size and muscle mass are not taken into consideration.
