Following criticism, the Pope condemned anti-semitism.

Yes, following criticism, too bad he couldn't find it in his heart on his own--Me thinks he needs to locate that spiritual voice and listen!

ArtCatDom -> RE: He had to be Goaded, but the Pope Did S'thing Right (5/31/2006 9:06:54 AM)

What a load of bull.

Pope Benedict, as much as I dislike the man, has been clear on several past occasions (both before and after his appointment as Bishop of Rome) about racism being wrong and sinful. He has also from the get-go continued John Paul's work in reaching out to other monotheistic religions.

I don't think it was at all inappropriate for him to talk of larger theological questions inspired by the Holocaust while at Auschwitz rather than beating the dead horse and going for the simple satisfying route of screaming the Nazis were evil. He, like John Paul, is a highly educated man deeply immersed in philosophy and theology. Why condemn him because he didn't just do the same thing every figure does at Nazi sites? Why condemn him for not saying what everyone knows to appeal to the lowest common denominator? Why condemn him for actually talking about the larger spiritual issues of the big issues of recent history?

well how about I just condem him

I don't happen to feel that great  about the Catholic religion

how the religion covers up pedifiles and breed them and never mind cover up murder
how the religion takes others holidays and make them theres
how the religion is slowly going down hill churchs are closeing and there has to be a reason for that

they condem same sex relationships

they shun Marriage yet preach it

sorry...don't care any reason to condemn the pope to Me would be a good reason since he is the leader and law maker of that religion.

The RCC has a piss-poor record of disrespecting "heretics" and indigenous peoples.  No, i am not saying the Church has never acted properly, but it very, very old.  It has always been run by human beings and has engaged in some atrocities.

i have repeatedly been told that the then-Pope made a deal with Hitler to look the other way while Italian Jews were sent to death camps in exchange for not plundering the Vatican.  i cannot give You a web site, but it is thought provoking that in fact the Nazis never did plunder the Vatican during WW II.

Any organization run by human beings will from time to time exhibit bad behavior.

Condemn away if you'd like. Your choice. I was simply pointing out that the OP and the article they reference present a very inaccurate picture.

Covers up murder? I'd be interested to hear that one.

Also, it's notable that while in North America and Europe the Catholic Church is on the decline, it's holding firm in South America and gaining big ground in Africa and Asia. It's hardly a dying church. (Also notable that most traditional religions are losing ground in Westeren nations, the Catholic Church is not alone.)

I don't dispute any of that. However, I would say that it's not any differant than the religions that came before and after it. Human beings are human beings.

Still, this is a strawman response. The fact is that the OP is not only making a mountain out of a molehill, it's misrepresenting Benedict's actual known stances and previous actions.

HEXZACTLY!!!! Off with his head, I say, or at least that raving red queen shouted that as she went to find another flogger. lol
There are entirely to many atrocities committed in the name of the Pope and the catholic church; let him apologize for the churche's torture, murder, land theft and the many other "sins" that he and his kind committed upon those that weren't able to protect themselves from the church and its intrigue.
Time after time the church placed its heavy foot upon the neck of those that had no arguement with their religion, but didn't want to forsake their own, especially ones that were much older than the catholic church or christanity.

Hate to shatter your illusions, but the Roman Catholic Church has apologized numerous times for the atrocities it has committed, including under the current Pope Benedict.

meatcleaver -> RE: He had to be Goaded, but the Pope Did S'thing Right (5/31/2006 9:57:53 AM)

Every religion has its criminals whether Christian, Jewish or Muslim and all have piss poor records. Read the bible, god commands Moses to commit genocide.

I'm not a Catholic nor a Christian, I think religion is superstitious bollocks and though the Vatican's record could have been better in WWII, it is not as bad as the enemies of the Catholic Church made out. It is also conjecture that the Vatican could have done anything since anyone who questioned the Nazi party ended up in the concentration camps. The Nazis were atheist so what would they care about what the church said?

Illusions?  Apologies?  Are You out of Your mind?  The RCC even ran a "facility"to "rehabilitate" pedophiles for many years.  "I'm sorry" doesn't cut it.  The Vatican should cough up some serious dough to help Americans collect their judgments.

Yanno, ArtCatDom, IMHO, being Catholic is not for weenies.  One must accept that the RCC has, and does, behave badly at times...sometimes very badly.  You seem unable to accept this.

I agree totally, every religion must apologize for it's sins against people!  I demand the key clerics of Islam to get on their knees and apologize for their to date unrepentant use of slaves in the past, the wars of conquest, and the brutal repression (past and present) of anything that didn't have a penis, or a beard.  All prodestant ministers must also get on TV and beg for mercy for their crimes too.  While we're at it, Wiccans, I demand every tenth one of you be shot for your refusal to act, and police up all those stupid little teenagers who claim their wiccan just to piss off their parents.  Remember kids, let he (or she) who is without sin cast the first stone!

Heck, let's even forget that religions are composed of millions of people, across thousands of years of history!  Yeah!

Hextasm!  Mullahrific! Bapismizziles!
