I'm currently involved in a casting for a short independent film about power and control in male/female relationships. It's a classic love triangle plot, but to add a twist I'm using BDSM as a dramatic device, the married woman is a dominant female, and the other woman is identified as a female submissive. However there is no evidence that there has been any infidelity other than a series of conversations on a BDSM website.

It's a lo/no/deferred payment agreement.

quote:

Elizabeth
Female, aged 35-55 years, a married female dominant, Caucasian, middle-class, respectable, well-spoken, self-assured.

This is the character breakdown for the female dominant character.

The other female role is..

quote:

Becca
Female, aged 25-45, identifying as a female submissive, single mother, working class, emotionally unstable, in possession of a gun..

The casting call has been viewed approximately 300 times on each site.

The role of Becca has attracted 28 applications from one website and so far 24 applications from another.

The above role of Elizabeth has attracted no applications from one website and only 4 applications from the other.

Two actresses have removed themselves from consideration on account of the BDSM content of the script.

At the informal auditions I am holding I have explained that BDSM is being used as a dramatic device and have spoken the importance of developing the character of Elizabeth as a positive role who in the film could be taken as a positive role model for younger women.

The film is an independent short which I intend to classify as an 18 due to some strong language and descriptions of sexually explicit actions (by the lead character Becca)

So far the three actresses who have been asked to consider or been offered the role of Elizabeth have turned it down and/or removed themselves from the casting/project.

Thoughts, observations, comments?

1. You differentiate by which woman is Domme and which is sub.  To me, a huge difference is that Elizabeth has a relationship outside her marriage.  That might deter some actresses.

2. From the mini-bios, I suspect that Becca's character will have more opportunity to act and to impress.

I suggest you mention in the mini-bio what role Elizabeth has with her husband.  This will make the character more complex and more interesting.

Why not ask the prospective Beccas what attracted them to the role?

I am going to guess......and it is just a very shot-in-the-dark guess, that it is the 'emotionally unstable with a gun' that makes the role of Becca look like more fun to portray. And, I believe, easier. After all they have crazy and a gun to back it up, as props.

The other role would be to me, more challenging as it will require more acting. In that the actress will have much to convey in a much more subtle way. Perhaps if you present the role as a 'challenging one, requiring a very skilled actress, able to convey emotion etc, without the aide of .......yada yada yaday' it will give cause for a few more to rise to the bait. So to speak.

1/ Is it considered 'cute' that the troublemaker (yes, I know, it takes two) is called a submissive?

2/ Is he called one too, or are we left to infer? (So, two submissive troublemakers and thier victim, the Domina)

3/ Isn't the definition of infidelity, "We can't let my wife find out!"?

4/ How is it the Domina has a Queenly name and the submissive has a partial one? Not worth the trouble to say the poor things' whole name? Not quite subliminal message here?

5/ How is it the weapon is not mentioned among the reasons for the 18 rating? Can't show a breast unless it has a bullet hole in it? Who says?

6/
quote:

It's a lo/no/deferred payment agreement.

Does this refer to 'the affair' or to the actresses or to the project generally?

As for why the actresses don't want the role, I will have to leave that to others. Not a clue. Unless it's 6.

Edit : Had to switch 3&5

Thank you for your points.. As a starting point I do ask each candidate about the script, what they think about the script and also what brings them into the project.

We do discuss the relationships and I explain that the relationship between husband and wife is an established female led relationship.

I explain that there are three roles, the lead role, Becca, the supporting role which is Elizabeth, and her husband Paul has the pivotal role. Both the roles of Paul and Elizabeth are challenging..

I feel I must add that there have been five applications for the role of Paul, two have turned it down, and one has been offered and has accepted the role, and two have been unsuitable. One has been too far away, the listing also stated Caucasian and the other application started out 'I know that you stated Caucasian but I am a black African actor with..'

The statistics can also be skewed by the way I have presented the project as a whole.

Maybe there is still something here that I'm not seeing and putting across?

I agree that on paper (just the little blurbs) that Becca would be more fun to play. I'd do like Steven suggested and write something interesting about the "leading lady" (get it, huh, get it?!) that would make her (in just the short intro) become more compelling.

I'd play her, but it still sounds like more fun to play the other one.

Can I be Elizabeth? Pleeeze?

Srsly, if I had been born with a normal face, I would have pursued acting. And when I was doing my fuddly local bit at school, our former-broadway-performer teacher let us know that we were NOT who we were playing, which is why we were ACTORS and fucking learn whatever the character was or get offstage.

Many view BDSM as porn. While that is not true, its certainly not how the general public who knows nothing about BDSM views our lifestyle. So I can really see how an actor or actress would fear it being labeled as porn and would not want to tarnish their careers as such. Just a wild speculation on my part. Without doing a post interview of why they turned down the job its really hard to say.

If Lady Hibuscus is granted the role of Elizabeth, may I PLEASE play her husband?

Hello A/all,

I seem to remember Ms. Stella bringing up the subject of this film in a previous post here on Ask-A-Mistress. At that time, I think that it was envisioned as a play. I was the evil individual who hijacked the thread from a discussion about the origins of personal power; to a discussion about the gun being a 'character' in it's own right. Hey, it's the cowboy in me.

I think that at first glance, the role of Becca may appear to be the meatier role. However, I completely (but respectfully) disagree! I think that all that needs to be done is a bit of tweaking of Elizabeth's description.

Elizabeth
Female, aged 35 to 55, married female, caucasian, middle classed, courageous and personally powerful, elegant and well spoken, the type of woman who can make even the strongest man go weak in the knees with the slightest glance.

Promote this role as interesting and challenging and maybe there will be more interest.

Personal to Ms. Stella: I'm glad to see that your project is progressing. Best Wishes!

Respectfully
Mike

Elizabeth is a very boring role. Doing this won't help an actress get experience in playing a challenging part. Since you want them to do it for free, they need some reason to do so. No money, then the part itself has to be worthwhile in helping them play harder parts in the future. And it comes across as something they could call in, so why should they give you their time for nothing?

Becca is a more challenging part, it allows someone to display many more emotions. And it's a lot more fun to play.

Well, all things considered ... the hockey tickets mentioned on that other thread are sounding better, and better
