Also, "social conservatives could rally against Rick Santorum and put him over the top. " clearly is meant to say "social conservatives could rally FOR Rick Santorum and put him over the top. " Finally, I disagree with the notion that W was a RINO, and believe that his break with conventional wisdom and drive to score political successes regardless of the misgivings of the electorate, marks him as part of the new breed. But an interesting article.

But an interesting article. To me from the advent of Reagan it has been he and all of the above in parceling together a repubs enough to win the whitehouse. They section-out and divide on social issues from which they say themselves say govt. should be removed, yet use religion (so-called social conservatives) for every election to try to divide and conquer. It has always been the so-called 'silent majority', or the 'Christian right, i.e., the Evangelical right, the Catholics and orthodox fervently religious that has empowered the right for more than 30 years. It is this faction that reared its prejudicial head in Iowa. In NH though...nowhere to be seen. Then on most economic issues repubs quickly become...corporatists and get busy kissing capitalist ass for his free speech...er money...cash. In this way they are NOT conservatives at all. They are petty little power barons, concerned only with their own narrow short-term self interest. This time, their first priority, needing only 41 votes, block everything and everybody they can to...get Obama out. The righties today are real statesmen hey ?

MrRodgers, the term "silent majority", IMO, was Nixon's way of reconciling the fact that the people he interacted with felt one way and the voting public felt another. He simply postulated that there were lots of people who didn't vote that felt just like he did, so he had a calling to represent them. Self delusion. That is NOT your intent with the term. Also, I would disagree with you in your assertion that the Catholics are aligned with the religious right. The Church itself is IMO, more conservative and unsplintered than its rank and file.

You may be correct on the Catholic mainstream and other factions of the christian right, but the whole divide an conquer technique is to extract all of the fringe members who vote their religious beliefs and it started with Nixon when just as the 'boweevil' dem (dixiecrat) racists had all either left the congress or switched to the repub party. The so-called 'silent majority' thus became code for the socially conservative, religious right particularly in the south. Nixon having extended Vietnam for years, presiding over allowing the National Guard to shoot down American students at Kent state, running on a war on drugs, (and hippies) law & order platform came complete with and in time for the "love it or leave it' and 'win the war at all cost' crowd. That produced exactly what the dr. ordered just as in opposition to the Iraq war. Dissenters were traitors, anybody going to Canada to avoid the draft, traitors too and were to lose their American citizenship. The whole dividing and 'fractionizing' of the electorate, works no matter the subject matter...just ask Karl Rove.

if huntsman, and people like him, aren't the future of the gop, then the gop has no future. but then again, i'm a rino, so what would i know, right? [:D]

I was actually thinking of this myself last week after seeing Gov. Huntsman debate. He was able to debate his ideas and do it with strength without the trash talk so commonly associated with and expected by republicans. There`s no doubt that the GOP has been bleeding moderates for years,being called RINOs by the extremist half of the party and being completely disillusioned by neo-conservatism. There is no place to go for the mods,tho.The Ts? Those are the extremists.Ron Paul? Also extreme.The libertarians? Who are they? But John Huntsman.......there is someone the moderates can get behind and might be be(or part of) the thing that finally splits the party.
