TheKingofHell -> Am I a masochist? (1/13/2012 11:02:42 PM)

Okay I have OCD and I constantly apply it to my behavior every time I do something that I don't like no matter how small or seemingly meaningless I constantly beat myself up about. When I mention this to a friend he tells me that I have a self abusive personality and that it's called masochism. Which is funny because I always thought that masochists were suppose to enjoy pain and mental torment.

OCD is a mental illness. That "constant beating yourself up" mentally over it is a completely normal element of OCD. People with OCD are usually very much aware of how irrational the tasks or thoughts are and how asinine it is to dwell on them but due to the complexity of the illness it's very difficult to stop. They are have shown links between the levels of seratonin and dopamine in people with OCD.

Masochism is a kinky preference for enjoying pain. It produces endorphins (pleasurably feelings) and an adrenaline "rush."

People with true OCD do not derive pleasure from the tasks/thoughts... they are often crippling, unrelenting and can greatly impact daily functioning.

"Better to rule in Hell that to serve in heaven."

I think this consistent with a self abusive personality. And I can see how OCD can contribute to the preference to be allowed ones own way even if it is perhaps not as pleasant as things otherwise would be. However, as KitKat said, the use of the word Masochism in that context is glib and not technically appropriate. I doubt your friend meant to be taken 100% seriously. It is not uncommon when addressing a matter serious enough to be uncomfortable for a speaker to attempt (lame) humor to lighten a heavy message.

You hate it, but he calls you a Masochist = funny, sort of.

Side issue. You might consider saving the self flagellation for those occasions you are actually deserving.

Sounds like your friend is practicing backyard psychology.
Since you put yourself forward as a Dom, I could see the lack of control in your OCD making you do things bothering you, but unless you do it on purpose it's not self abusive. And in no way makes you a masochist.
You have to enjoy it on some level for that to be the case.

King, can you be more descriptive and give us an example, start to finish, of what you mean? I don't get enough information from your question to be able to get a good sense of what you mean.

I flip out over small things like bumbing into someone or what not.

What does "flip out" mean? What goes on in your head, what do you say to yourself about it, during or afterwards, how long does it go one, etc.?

Thanks, Kali Girl, that's interesting stuff. I need to hear the exact conversation going on in his head, and the emotional feelings that result. That's why I'm asking him for more specific, personal information, as what he gave us was too vague, and didn't give me enough to go on, to form and share an opinion.

I hope you have no self-abusive OCDs regarding the misspelling of words, buddy.

Things that go bump in the night and all that rot..........
