Kitty doesn't want you to pet him.
Stop petting him.

Now, later, after he quits expecting you to always non-consensually pet him, *lol*, there may be ways to bring him around.
But not now.

ShibsStories -> RE: Cat wont stop biting me (1/14/2012 6:39:29 AM)

This a new thing with an old cat, or a new cat?

Duskypearls -> RE: Cat wont stop biting me (1/14/2012 6:44:07 AM)

King, give me history on your cat, i.e., age, sex, sexual status (intact, neutered or spayed), present and past medical history (including vaccinations, illnesses, injuries), from where and how you got him, if you have you other animals, etc., etc., etc., and maybe we can come up with something to help.

One thing to be aware of: if kitty is breaking the skin, cat bites have a high risk of infection.

http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/animal_bites.htm#Which is worse, dog bites or cat bites

Dusky, your advice on cats is wonderful.

I was watching a new show the other day... My cat from hell.... and it was funny. But they had a cat on there who hissed and clawed at everyone. If they didnt walk backwards, the cat would literally lunge at their legs and attack.

The guy came in... wow.. he looked like he was from hell.. and told them, mistake number one, get the cat fixed. Apparently cats also can have major PMS. It sprayed all over the house (a female) and the cat was an indoor one. Talk about one case of the hornies!

The cat whisper... lol

Thanks, sweetie. Animal behavior fascinates me. Wish I knew more about the cat from hell, and may search for the show. Have you a link to offer?

It's not uncommon for animals (or people) with anxiety, fear, or dominance based agression to display the kind of behaviors you describe in that cat.

Spraying is how animals communicate, and mark their territory, and is commonly done during mating season to announce, with pheromones, their availability. Spaying/neutering will often, but not always, curb or eliminate this behavior, unless there is an underlying medical issue (bladder or urinary tract infection, diabetes, hormonal problems), stress, or overcrowding causing it.

In my spaceship we've seen it on animal planet. Funny though, my spaceship never found THE animal planet. (my minions kinda suck though)

I highly recommend a taser. Great to stop cat biting as well as all other sorts of animals :)

A little kitty bondage goes a long way.

Snort -> RE: Cat wont stop biting me (1/14/2012 1:41:37 PM)

I had a cat like that. Pet him for a minute and he wants more. Pet him for two minutes and he bites me. So after a minute, I dump his ungrateful ass on the floor and put him on ignore for a bit.

King, without further information from you about your cat, i.e., socialization status, age, other behavioral issues, his history before you got him, etc., I will offer this. Provide me with more, and I can do better.

Don't attempt to pet your cat until he is relaxed, calm and submissive. Don't give him any warning it's coming. Then, only pet briefly on a place he will tolerate it. Before he has a chance to react negatively, stop, and walk away. Always end on a positive note.

If that doesn't work, go with intent to do the same thing, only bring him a treat or piece of food he likes (but don't give it to him yet), and get his nose's attention with it. Once his full attention is on finding, following or getting that treat, raise it above his head so he must stretch up a bit to reach it, then gently, give him a pet or two. Before he has a chance to react negatively, stop, give him the treat, and walk away. Always end on a positive note.

It may also be helpful to refrain from petting the cat until it comes to you to be pet, and even then, keep it short and sweet, until he learns/realizes it's within his power to receive, or reject petting. He may have underlying trust, boundary or over-stimulation issues.

Have you other animals in the house?

Do you wear any strong chemical fragrances (hair, cologne, bath or body products) that might put him off?

Does he allow others to pet him, presently, or in the past?

How long has he been this way?

Has he any other odd/anti-social behaviors?

Is there any time he will allow you, or others, to pet him?

Does he perceive you as a threat?

Does he get enough stimulation and exercise?

Do you approach him with soft, calm, assertive energy, or are you trying to "press" youself upon him with intense, frustrated, expectant energy?

Each time you approach to pet him, are you relaxed and in the present, or mentally expecting him to react badly as he has in the past?

Some cats get overstimulated easily from being pet. The trick is stopping before it triggers their negative response, which leaves it ending on a positive note. Leaving him wanting more, than getting too much, can be very effective.

Smack him in the head.

Seriously.  If he's asking for it and then bites when you give it, then he has a behavioural problem.  He needs a reminder that you're in charge.

And for fuck's sake, don't follow a fucking rulebook on when you can and can't pet your cat.  That's just stupid.  You're fundamentally dealing with temperament here and if the cat's just basically a shithead, then educate it with a whack or get rid of it.

While you're entitled to your opinion, your advice, my friend, is incorrect, uneducated, inadvisable, and counterproductive to the goal of removing inappropriate behavior, as punishing such behavior only increases it. The cat has an issue or sensitivity that can only be resolved by using animal psychology, not harsh, cruel, physical, punitive measures. It is entirely possible he developed such behavior in response to being mishandled, or abused, by methods such as yours, in the first place.

Abusive, heavy-handed treatment of any living creature is sure to either create, or exacerbate pre-existing problems, which leads me to inquire, how did you come upon your present fearful, angry, punitive, rigid and retaliative state? I'm guessing it's not because you were loved, respected, and well-treated growing up, and are simply passing down upon others, the pain, abuse and neglect you experienced. Nobody gets that way in a vacuum, or a positive atmosphere.

Hurt people, hurt people (and animals). Pain begets pain, violence begets violence.
