Ideally, any relationship -- whether BDSM or vanilla -- should be about both parties trying to help the other become the best version of themselves they can be. That said, a lot of relationships aren't ideal, and people get involved in BDSM relationships for all sorts of reasons -- some for the reasons you state; some for sad reasons; some just to have some kinky fun with no big cosmic purpose. I think there are a lot of different ways BDSM can work for different people, and not every sub necessary wants their soul to be mastered by someone else.
