Lucylastic -> another ugly one rears its head (1/14/2012 4:02:01 PM)

An email recently sent by Kansas House Speaker Mike O'Neal (R-Hutchinson) to his Republican colleagues appears to endorse a controversial prayer that some say calls for the untimely death of President Obama.

"Pray for Obama. Psalm 109:8." That's the slogan an email from O'Neal refers to, a phrase that's become popular in some circles on bumper stickers and other merchandise. The bible passage itself reads, "Let his days be few; and let another take his office." The real controversy arises in the next verse of Psalm 109, however, which continues, "May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow."

In a message accompanying the email, O'Neal writes:

"At last -- I can honestly voice a Biblical prayer for our president! Look it up -- it is word for word! Let us all bow our heads and pray. Brothers and Sisters, can I get an AMEN? AMEN!!!!!!"

O'Neal's office has insisted that his use of the psalm was referring only to the first segment, which they say simply shows support for Obama to be replaced as president, via an election, as soon as possible.

Back in 2009, The Huffington Post's Jason Linkins suggested that Psalm 109:8 was "the latest thing in 'Debasing The Institutions You Pretend To Hold Dear In Order To Suggest That President Barack Obama Should Be Murdered Without Actually Coming Right Out And Saying So.'"

In some circumstances, endorsement of Psalm 109 with regards to Obama has been dealt with seriously. Last year in Florida, a corrections officer was suspended after highlighting the passage and referring to it as the "Obama prayer."

While O'Neal isn't apologizing, outrage over the content of his email has sparked a petition drive calling for his immediate resignation.

O'Neal's email supporting Psalm 109.8 wasn't the only email that emerged to stir controversy either. Earlier this month, O'Neal apologized for an email, also forwarded to his GOP colleagues, that referred to First Lady Michelle Obama as Mrs. YoMama and compared her to the Grinch.

Now I know we had this discussion when it first came up. But it seems again that this is more frowned upon and more spread around, but why is he inviting more problems?
Free speech I get it.. that isnt the issue
While it will get a whole whack of assholes applauding him, seriously is he mentally deficient to keep doing this??? Does he really believe his story that its just the first section he can claim??
or is it crazy like a fox with an ulterior motive.
Im going for the second one...
thoughts?

Rachel Maddow, Frank Schaeffer Discuss The Latest In Thinly-Veiled Evangelical Christian Obama Death Threats

We see the evangelical groups I talked about in my new book, Patience With God, enthralled by an apocalyptic vision that I go into in some detail there. They represent the millions of people who have turned the Left Behind series into best sellers. Most of them are not crazy, they're just deluded. But there is a crazy fringe to whom all these little messages that have been pouring out of Fox News, now on a bumper sticker, talking about doing away with Obama, asking God to kill him. Really, this is trolling for assassins. This is serious business.

Thans Kali, I know we DID have it up as a topic for discussion , I am just too lazy to actually look for the excuses given last time:)

Moonhead -> RE: The Latest In Thinly-Veiled Evangelical Christian Obama Death Threats (1/14/2012 4:17:58 PM)

"Weak" is what the excuses were last time. The technical term on this side of the Atlantic is "crap".

This is some sick stuff.  Thanks Lucy.  I'm signing the petition right away, but we all know it will do no good.  Only if a Dem had circulated such a email about Bush would anybody have had to resign.

What petition? Link please.

Well, there might be something here, if we didn't have the wonderful history we do, of Christians who grab one verse, and run with, while completely ignoring what comes after. Within that tradition, it makes perfect sense.

Lucylastic -> RE: another ugly one rears its head (1/14/2012 5:12:01 PM)

ok Rich... his insistence might have worked if he had walked away from it, so why is he draggin it up AGAIN after being told it wasnt a good idea...
it was pointed out nearly two years ago.
bad memory? couldnt find a 'less" troubling prayer?

Agreed...though unlike another(see above post) poster I can not bring myself to lol over such offensive bullshit.

What else do you expect from the state that spawned Fred Phelps and his brood?

imperatrixx -> RE: another ugly one rears its head (1/14/2012 7:47:02 PM)

I don't know, the idea of praying for Jesus to intervene in American politics is so absurd to me that I can't help but laugh. I mean it's really sad that half the US is basically heading in the direction of Iran with a southern drawl but really now, how the fuck can a country be so ass backward and not expect people to laugh at it?

I'm truly delighted to be able to fully endorse the sentiments you express here, TheHeretic! (tweak passes TheHeretic a glass of water and reaches for the smelling salts, just in case .....)

While I'm far from an authority on the words of the founder of Christianity, I do recall Jesus saying something about turning the other cheek when attacked.

It's worse than odd that people who wrap themselves in the mantle of Christianity and spiritual purity ignore the clear words and specific message of their Lord whenever they perceive it suits their political interests. It's shocking that they promote messages that could be taken as inciting violence in the name of a religion that places peace and love above all other values (and yes that is people loving each other, not this gender or that gender loving the 'opposite' gender only)

Remember the Congressional prayer group over Healthcare?

Good point, well made.
