Everything takes time. Congress is holding up a lot of things. I agree with DS and wish they were forced to say yes or no within a limited period of time. Maybe its time they were forced to do their own jobs instead of giving interviews.
I do too Taz, the government is broken, no doubt it needs reform, it needs streamlining, it needs many things done to it. its gonna take longer than one term of a pres with nothing else to worry about..
to expect otherwise is beyond ridiculous

here is a list of the various governmental agencies...

http://www.usa.gov/directory/federal/index.shtml

There is no way anyone can convince me that some of those cannot be combined.

I've already cited two that cannot do their jobs because of overlapping bailwicks and got ignored, tazzy.

cut Navy Carrier Battle Groups from 12 down to 6. A couple wings of Air Force planes, two divisions of the Army?
Those cuts could save a trillion every year.
Then, if we could prevent congress from spending that money the debt would go down every year.

I'm for the reasonable combination of agencies--it will cut overhead and red tape.

I'm also for the elimination of the expensive and silly Department of Homeland Theater and reducing the very bloated military budget as popeye notes above, along with letting the military nix projects/purchases it doesn't even want/need.

Music, that stuff comes from lobbyists and congressmen/senators who's states have cos. who want to sell more stuff to the military and are big contributers to said congressmen/senators.
While in the Navy when in port we were always getting new stuff (beyond our divisions budget, "Ops.") like new chairs which would last probably last 20 years. So, they ended up in storage with a bunch of other stuff because the chairs we had were perfectly fine and were probably 5-8 years old anyway.
The friggin ship would probably be de-commisioned before we needed new chairs!
And we had about 200 of those green military notebooks! One of them would probably last for a year depending on what it was used for.
And all kinds of other stuff, stationary, shitloads of those black govt. pens, foul weather jackets, gloves navigation charts that we never used, extra this, extra that and we were only one ship! And on Norfork Naval Base they had HUGE warehouses that were full of all kinds of stuff I'm sure.
And the Engineers had a shitload of 55 gal drums of grease. You name it we probably had it in spades.
And each division had their own storage spaces!

Combining the FDA and the USDA wouldn't be a bad idea as overlapping areas of interest makes it difficult for either to do their job effectively.

Sorry, Moon, yes you did. And I agree, a perfect example. One agency fighting another, neither knowing, or admitting, when one has jurisdiction over the other, or when they dont want jurisdiction to deal with a problem.

Confusion at best.

Good idea? Bad? Opinions

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/apnewsbreak-obama-to-seek-power-to-merge-agencies-first-up-would-be-commerce-trade/2012/01/13/gIQApszdvP_story.html

WASHINGTON — Seeking more power to shrink the government, President Barack Obama on Friday suggested smashing six economic agencies into one, an election-year idea intended to halt bureaucratic nightmares and force Republicans to back him on one of their own favorite issues.

It depends. If it goes the way things usually do with government then it will be bad. 1. The six will combine and become one. Becoming one massive entity. 2. It will retain its bureaucracy. 3. It will be likely to be harder and not easier to deal with than the smaller entity. 4. It will spend more money not less.

And your assumptions are based on a cynical view of goverment as a whole, right?

No. History and tendencies.

I don't know that making the administration of ever-expanding onerous regulation more efficient, is quite the idea, when we talk about reducing the size of government.

How so, Muse? Just because we put a bunch of departments under the same HR and payroll offices doesn't alter the mission, or create a unified and simple framework to minimize the regulatory burden.

Apples and oranges. Regulation and overhead are hardly the same. Agencies tasked with overlapping duties are a needless cost and a red tape hurdle. That's far more than combining HR and payroll.

Deregulation is another matter.

Do you not agree it must start somewhere, Rich?

Granted, 1000 to 2000 jobs........ 3 billion dollars...... and less red tape doesnt seem like much, but it is a start.

whatever happens , some people arent going to be happy with how or what is done and that has noting to do with party lines(well its not dependent on it.)
Overlap is a huge waste no matter where you go, streamlining is good. De-regulation.... I dont think anyone will come to a consensus of exactly where to "de-regulate"

In my own place of opinion when it comes down to safety, hygiene, pollution, food and drug safety and consumer issues, Im for more restrictions on companies who dont care what effect their products have on the public. Especially after realising JUST how little protections the public have. *yet* compared to what I have grown up with. Make them accountable and it might reduce their law suits, lawyers fees and innumerable court case.
there is no free market when they can buy their way out of accountability.

A start, or a token gesture, Tazzy?

Yes, Tim, it's very much apples and oranges between what conservatives think of as reducing government, and what our President is trying to do to capture some of that theme for his own use.

Considering he doesnt own a crystal ball, and has no certainty of the outcome, meaning the next president could stream line the agencies, with Congressional approval *and they would be hypocritical to say less government and not agree to some reductions* I see it as a good start.

But, you could ask those whose jobs will be cut if they believe its a token gesture.

Appeal to emotion. See the "job-killing technology thread," and ask a stableboy how he felt about the expansion of the automobile.

Im quite sure he wasnt happy either. Conservatives have been complaining about the size of government. Master Tim had started a thread about what to do with government. I believe everyone pretty much agreed government was too big. Part of being too big is size. It needs to start at some point.

How do you know whats redundant until you combine?

Ya know, this is really confusing.

Conservatives have complained for years, bitterly, about the cost of government. Regardless of who's fault it was (hint, everyone's) we have all agreed something must be done.

I can see not everyone is happy with this decision, feeling its just a political trick.

So, then the question that begs to be answered is...

If not this, then what?

Let me first say that I don't trust the motives of President Obama in this. I don't like most of his ideas and policies.
I also question why this wasn't offered back during the huge fight over how to manage the debt ceiling.

That being said, if this is done correctly it is a good idea.  There are a lot of departments in the government that are either too big or no longer needed. If they were eliminated or streamlined it would be a good thing.

If this happens, I see it ending up as a bunch of token moves so Obama can state he is for smaller government, even though his other actions during his term state otherwise. This is a re-election ploy, thats all.

Still, it is a good idea, and denying that because the person who brought it up is someone I don't agree with on most things would be foolish.
