I am Engaged, this isn't a say congrats thread (though you should) its been a few months now.

This is an ideas thing. Obviously my head has been full of wedding ideas, I am totally poor so that makes my wonderful imagination even more important but I still wanted to ask.

What do you think a wedding needs?
What is the most important things?
What would you/did you do to save money?
What would you /did you do to make it unique?

Just anything wedding related would be nice to read, descriptions of yours or your dream or whatever

[:)]

Ok really I just want to read nice stories. To the money thing just quirky ideas as in someone I knew saved jam jars for a year and put little tea lights in it.

We have someone to make our cake, a friend for the photos, no after show deal, and probably have the venue sorted with a hog roast as the meal (all speculative we won't be getting married till next yearish)

Certainly congratulations are in order.

As for what a wedding needs.........I actually think it is very very simple and that all the rest is just fluff.

Love. The two people that are getting married. The person to do the marrying. The people that mean the very most to the two people getting married.

My ex and I saved money several ways:

1. We got married in my house.
2. When we found that serving some crap like sandwiches to guests would top $20 apiece, we opted to hold the reception at a Sunday brunch buffet.  No reception hall rent, it was far cheaper than catering, and the food was much better.
3. Get entertainment and photographer from craigslist.
4. We wrote our own vows and ceremony.  Much more meaningful.
5. We told everyone to dress appropriately.  No matching everyone's outfits and a lot less stress.

Congratulations!! Our Daddysredhead was actually a Wedding Planner at one point, which means that her wedding this summer will be perfect!

Me, I think weddings are far overdone these days (as an Italian, I can assure you of this!). A nice setting, a good meal or snackies, the people most important to the bride and groom. CAKE. Comfy chairs.

kalikshama -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 8:33:00 AM)

I got married in Okinawa for less than $50, including my dress. I thought about having a bigger wedding when I returned to the US but decided it wasn't important to me. We visited his family and mine the next year.

Decide what's important to you and budget accordingly.

If you post your priorities, we may be able to help give you more specific tips for saving money - your OP is rather broad.

My cousin kept the cost of her wedding down by making it a potluck and having friends who were in a band perform and having friends take pictures.

But if, for example, professional pictures are essential to you, by all means budget for a pro.

Especially great ideas!

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 8:34:57 AM)

Yeah we want to keep it small. To be honest I do not really know enough people to have a big wedding, and I never really understood the desire to get married with hundreds of people you don't really know there, as if to 'show off' that you are getting married, seems surreal and far more stressful than I can deal with. So only the people I truly adore will be coming.

LaTigresse -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 8:59:51 AM)

The very best wedding I ever attended.

It was in a park pavilion next to a pond. Nature was the decor. The food was picnic food. The seating was picnic tables. The dress was casual. Guests were advised to bring their own fishing poles.

21 1/2 years later the couple is still married and the guests that were there still talk about how it was the best wedding they ever attended.

Phoenixpower -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 9:14:43 AM)

Congratulations [:)]

I will get back to you in two weeks time when I (supposedly) have proper internet again as I'll look up a mail from a friend who went some years ago to two very different weddings (one was in a forest area with rock music or so)...

Personally I would also keep it small, cause many of the folks I know live very far away anyway and I wouldn't see the point anyway in spending a fortune on such an important aspect in my personal life, when at times for years you don't meet at all, due to distance or just plain lazyness (I don't mind to travel far but stop to bother when it's apparent that it is one sided...)

If M and I would have married in 2010, then we very likely would have done it in a hot air balloon...Space limited and simple as well as personal...as you don't do that all the time...or at least I don't [:D]

GreedyTop -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 10:43:00 AM)

the most imprtant part, to me, was having the people I love and respect there. we married in a music store's rehearsal hall. Self DJd (by self, I mean whoever was closest to the CD player ATM). Friends supplied cakes and stuff, (and also did alterations on my dress - needed, since I used my Mom's). no fancy decoartions than little things that were mainly inside jokes (I'm sure my family was wondering wtf I was carrying a flying monkey rather than a bouquet, and wtf did the killer rabbit and pirate ducks have to do with anything!!).
Just don't book something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Al_Arab, and you should be fine if you do ceremony/reception in one place :)

LOVE YOU, smoke detector!! *grins* CONgrats!

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 10:59:48 AM)

We are looking at a Castle Greedykins, we went there on one of our first dates and its pretty breathtaking, it means he wants to have a sword but I think I may need to put a halt on that.

I am not keen on the idea of themes and stuff but, seeing as I am a wanna be hippy I want all seasonal wild flowers and the like. I like what LaT said about nature being the decor. I think an ipod may be the musical ideal really. I love the idea of in jokes, I think by keeping it small that would work pretty well.

GreedyTop -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 11:02:55 AM)

WHATCHA GOT AGAINST SWORDS?? *grin*

I have a sword.. it's more Confederate Army, I think,, but I'll try to dig it out and send a pic. if it works for you BOTH, I'd be happy to offer it as a wedding gift.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 11:06:25 AM)

Sweetheart, you coming will be gift enough, honestly!

I have nothing against swords, but I think if I bow down on that one the next step will be full metal armour!

GreedyTop -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 11:09:37 AM)

I HOPE I will be able to make it.. if not, you're stuck with the sword ;)

armour? consider it as paying tribute to the Knight who has fought for and won your heart :)

love ya, darling girl, and I am BEYOND happy for you both :)
*(dited because once again, I typed like crap and dropped a word, this time, instead of just the odd letter...)

GreedyTop -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 11:11:45 AM)

fuck. I hate editing only to realize my edit is shite.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 11:59:31 AM)

I know its an if hunny.

Lol yeah I know the cliche reasons for it, I am just not sure I am on board with them

Two commited parties and a vow.

FELICITATIONS!!!

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 12:28:56 PM)

We

1. Held the wedding on his family's land
2. Kept the guest list to mostly family
3. I had an amateur photographer do the photo's for super cheap because they were building a portfolio.
4. Since I love to cook I made most of the appetizers (cold) and we had everyone bring a dish instead of a present so it was potluck style. Since it was at a barn we had everyone wear casual clothes and footwear
5. My mom had a contact who did flowers plus I only had one bridesmaid so I was able to get flowers for cheap. My center piece was gerbera daisies floatin in glass dishes that I picked up from the dollar store.
6. The lady that made our cake did it out of her home and was trying to build her business so it was super cheap.
7. We rented chairs and table, but hooked an ipod up to a sound system and that was our DJ
8. He had an uncle who knew bartenders so that cut the cost of that.

We had our whole wedding my dress (which was the most expensive thing. Actually I had two dresses. I had a beautiful wedding dress that I ended up not wearing and a simple white summer style dress), tuxes, food, flowers, and booze.. basically everything for $3,000 total. It wasn't super crazy fancy or anything, but the weather was perfect and everyone had fun.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 12:33:26 PM)

That sounds lovely Imp, and I like the food idea may pinch that.

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Marriage and Weddings (1/19/2012 12:38:57 PM)

:)

When I started planning our wedding I just couldn't believe how many people try to rip you off because you are getting married. I was all about doing it cheap. Although to be honest we are thinking about having a themed renew our vows anniversary thing and I am all about the Alice in wonderland tea party. But, I've already found a way to do most of it on my own.

Oh and we made our own invitations( Well my mom and I did, he didn't.). We took our engagement pictures and made them into save the dates. Those were part of our photo package.
