Different people experience submission in different ways. Personally, I don't really "do" subspace - even during the most intense BDSM scenes I've been through (which might be tame by some people's standards, but still, they hurt) I was pretty much wide awake and thinking normally. This might have something to do with the fact that I don't easily slip into altered states of consciousness in general. I'm not one of those people who can readily get lost in music or caught up in the emotion of a crowd. I wouldn't worry that it's intrinsically "bad" if you don't experience some mental state that matches descriptions of subspace - what counts is whether your dominant is pleased by the way you approach submission, and whether you find it fulfilling.

I guess i'm just posting here, because perhaps people may have varying definitions? Or would be able to explain what it means to them?

My definition of subspace comes from Memory Alpha: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Subspace

quote:

Subspace is an integral part of the space-time continuum, distinct, yet coexistent with normal space. Subspace and normal space are confluenced together. However, in some regions an interfold layer forms between the two realms. (VOY: "Real Life") Subspace has an infinite number of domains. Geordi La Forge compared it with "...a huge honeycomb with an infinite number of cells". (TNG: "Schisms")

Tetryon particles are a form of subatomic particle which can only exist naturally in subspace. If they are released into normal space, they exhibit erratic properties. This can only occur when the fabric of subspace comes into contact with normal space in some manner.

Exactly what subspace is has never been revealed on screen, though many theories, both fan-based and scientific, have been put forward. Explaining subspace would be hard, since it is used as a solution and cause of various problems throughout the series. It is implied to be the medium through which faster-than-light travel and communication is possible, similar to hyperspace.

I haven't experienced the floating/spacing out part of it, but there have been times where I've gotten incredibly cold and shaky after it was all over. Physically it really wasn't all that intense either. I think it was more to do with how mentally/emotionally wrapped up I was in it. I do tend to have a little harder time thinking when that happens, but it's always after it's all over, not during.

For me, it happens during a beating, after the first few hard strokes. They are excruciating, but then I relax, breathe deeply, and surrender to the pain. Soon the pain becomes pleasure, and I'm floating in a warm glow. I never want it to end. But it does end, when Mistress sees that my body has had enough cane strokes. But by then I'm so far gone that I don't want her to stop. It is an amazing feeling.

You see that little galaxy way off in the right hand corner? Somewhere in the far reaching spiral arm is the area known as sub-space. You will need hubble telescope to see it.

Subspace?...It's where I keep my subs, but of course...and when I sell em, I do it at the Sub Shoppe.

Grins.
Nah, just kidding.
Hopping on what everyone here says, its an endorphin rush that can be triggered in a variety of ways, bondage, pain, sensory deprivation etc...or any combination thereof.

Like orgasms, it's one of those things that lots of folks talk about but many folks can't have-for whatever reason they can't drop their guard and let go enough to blast through the wall of self to get to the other side. In fact, I think there are a board regular or two who have lots and lots of experience and have never hit it.
So if ya haven't been there, don't freak. Some people just don't seem to be wired that way.

From an external perspective, subspace, especially when she coming up and out of it, often looks like the person is moving through a turgid substance, movements are super-duper slow, exaggerated, and the thought processes often don't quite seem to connect or do so at an almost oozing slow rate.
Grins
It's kinda like dealing with a drunk tard :-)

Despite the physical slowness though, she is often hypersensitive and locked in on me, what I say, what I do, the inflections in my voice, the (How to say this and not sound like some Birkenstock shod, tree hugging crystal wearing, incense smoking hippie?) aura I'm giving off.

Yeah, definitely. I don't experience subspace, or at least not the way it's usually described, and it seems like some people consider that a bad thing. But it's not. I still love doing this stuff and get a lot out of it.

And I don't think that it's necessarily a matter of not letting go, because I know I definitely do (in fact, that's one of the things I like most about D/s). I think it's probably just that different people's brains are wired to be more or less likely to trigger the release of those neurochemicals. I don't get a "runner's high" from running, either.
