It is seen in a lot of sub and switch profiles as well. It generally indicates how long someone has had BDSM as an active part of their life. However, it can be very subjective.

One person might count from the time when they were in high school and experimented a little with light bondage. Another might count from the time they became active in the community (either online or in the flesh). Yet another might not consider anything except after their first 24/7 BDSM relationship.

To be honest, the only way to know what they really mean by it is to ask.

I've been in the lifestyle for very nearly seven years.

Of course, my lifestyle is waking up at 0700 on saturdays and watching Mystery Science Theater 3000.

It really seems kinda random though, or just an internal reassurance.  Something along the lines of "well, I've been into this for X years, that means I know what I'm doing."
Of course, there is that annoying disconnect between length of experience, and appeal as a partner in many cases.

That's it; bottom line.  Like so much in the Scene, the words have so many individual meaning that, if it's important to you, it's vital to ask specifically.

It means different things to different people.
A lot of folks have been in various forms of relationships under the broad term of BDSM for various timespans.
Others consider the term BDSM more narrowly and consider anyone outside of their definition as never having been in the lifestyle. For some it is the time they have been involved in the more social aspect of it, as in associating with BDSM groups and events.
I think a general " in the lifestyle " time line could consist of the time from your first experiences of it till you quit it. There may be so called " vanilla " stretches here and there. But if it is what you like, and come back to. I would take it as legitimate time, from first till present. Level and intensity is debateable of course.
Consider how long you have been a _________ how do you define _________ any lapses in ___________ness? Prove you are a _________. Got any pictures? Do you have your __________ membership card?

If it is a HNG it means that the first time he/she read Castle Realm was 5 years ago, so they have been "experimenting" for 5 years....smiles

It means how long they have owned a computer and how long ago they found the chat room that more than likely lead them the wrong way.

That's why I say "active in wiitwd."  I think it's far more specific and clear.

Even stating active in what it is that we do, doesn't define anything.  That's the problem.
What you do I may not like...and what I like you may not.
Do any of us "do" anything the same?  About the only thing most can agree upon is we all engage in some sort of alternative lifestyle.

But I'm not trying to define anything, I don't think that's what a profile is for.

I'm giving someone a general picture of myself and my perspective.  I think that way of putting it works for that purpose.
