"I suppose you could say that nearly all members of congress are members of the 1%. The salary for the rank and file Senators and House Representatives is $174,000 per year. And as we well know, many made much more than that in the private sector before joining congress. However, I would reject the notion that just because a politician is well off means they have no concern for the less fortunate. FDR and JFK both came from well-monied backgrounds. Current Senators Bernie Sanders and Al Franken have shown considerable concern for the 99%.

But then, there are the other guys. The ones who take their support of the 1% and their dismissal of the needs of the rest of us to a near art form level. I’m sure most of us have heard the phrase, “how the other half lives.” Due to all the years of trickle down, tax cuts for the rich, and corporate deregulation, those words have now become irrelevant. Because there is no half and half equation. Our nation truly has become a bunch of fat cats at the very tip top of the pyramid with the rest of us looking up from below."

Maybe getting serious about Colbert's run and about pumping money into Stewart's PAC is what the intelligent, reasonable 99%ers should do?

I am amazed at how much it costs to be in politics, to run for office.. you need to be one of the 1%.. Romney's previous failed attempt to run cost 106 million and 45 million was his own money.. thats what i read anyway..

and its such a long drawn out process,.. which of course means it costs more.. which means ya gotta have bucks..

In Canada, its 2 months from the call of the election to voting night.. and there is a maximum that an individual or corp can contribute.. parties get a govt allowance based on the number of votes they got, in addition to their fundraising.. In 2009, total funding (public & private) totalled $127 million for all of the top 5 parties, thats a little more than it cost Romney to lose the republican leadership race.. not what it costs to actually win the Presidency...

I know that Canadian politics is small taters but.. the way its done there (not perfect, I know).. it allows common folk to run for politics, you know,.. the 99%ers, if they so choose..

Citizens United has put any hopes of such a system of electing a "government by the people..." into nothing but the past.  I guess when Bush called the Constitution a "goddamned piece of paper" he was telling the truth as that parchment means nothing any longer in the USA.

This guy makes a good primary and several supporting points.

A constitutional convention is more like it. Either that or leave the country which is becoming much more becoming.

Actually, it doesn't 'cost' anything to run for office beyond a few expenses. Politicians choose to seek this money and are happy to be beholding to the contributors.

Like Abramoff has informed and if there is anybody who should know, is that Washington operates within legalized bribery because there is no such thing as the...immaculate political contribution.

BTW Obama will 'need' to raise and will...a $Billion.

I'm not leaving, I'm loading. You're not the only to talk like that,a lot of people I speak with from all walks of life are really scared of what's happening.

I can't help but wonder how people in power, knowing how broke we are, can keep pushing foreign policies, that will inevitably cause and economic meltdown. Did they miss out on history in school? Do they not want to stay in power? Economic hardships have been the launching pad for every empires downfall I can think of throughout history.

I'm sad for what I think is coming but part of me is relieved because it's something I think has been needed for a very very long time. I'm prepared for it and have been working in that direction for the last year but I feel for those that aren't because they have chose to ignore it or dismiss it.

As a matter of fact, I'm working to get my family ready as well, especially for the coming inflation.
