ORIGINAL: tj444 I am amazed at how much it costs to be in politics, to run for office.. you need to be one of the 1%.. Romney's previous failed attempt to run cost 106 million and 45 million was his own money.. thats what i read anyway.. and its such a long drawn out process,.. which of course means it costs more.. which means ya gotta have bucks.. In Canada, its 2 months from the call of the election to voting night.. and there is a maximum that an individual or corp can contribute.. parties get a govt allowance based on the number of votes they got, in addition to their fundraising.. In 2009, total funding (public & private) totalled $127 million for all of the top 5 parties, thats a little more than it cost Romney to lose the republican leadership race.. not what it costs to actually win the Presidency... I know that Canadian politics is small taters but.. the way its done there (not perfect, I know).. it allows common folk to run for politics, you know,.. the 99%ers, if they so choose.. Actually, it doesn't 'cost' anything to run for office beyond a few expenses. Politicians choose to seek this money and are happy to be beholding to the contributors. Like Abramoff has informed and if there is anybody who should know, is that Washington operates within legalized bribery because there is no such thing as the...immaculate political contribution. BTW Obama will 'need' to raise and will...a $Billion.
