Aylee -> Is the end of TSA near? (1/24/2012 11:18:58 AM)

Has anyone else been following the detaining of Sen. Rand Paul by TSA?

http://dailycaller.com/2012/01/23/report-tsa-detains-sen-rand-paul-in-nashville/

I am hoping that this unconstitutional action by them may spell the end. Of course they were also allowed to lay hands on an ambassador (an act of war, by the way) with no repercussions, so perhaps not.

(Article I, Section 6, Clause 1) The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Is the end of TSA near? (1/24/2012 11:22:47 AM)

If he had been carrying a cupcake, it would have been all over.

I said when this was first starting up that every unaccused sex offender in the country would be heading for the line to apply.

I must have been traveling when the cupcake story came out. I must Google that. I keep seeing it referenced.

When you read it, Aylee, don't have a mouthfull of beverage ok?

ETA I hope the little one is growing like Kudzu on Steroids.

This is just taking that whole "healthy eating" thing way too far.

I know that cake is not good for you, but to consider it a danger to the whole flight is just excessive.

He is actually. Thank you for asking. He is quite the eater. He is the size of a real baby now. [:)]

Although I think that one waits to refer to them as noxious weeds until they are teenagers.

If your job was being put at risk because some asshole political offical decided to attack your company/organization for political points; wouldn't you want to make his/her life alittle more miserable than normal? Sounds like Rep. Paul got the kinda of karma he was looking for: being randomly searched and refusing to follow standard rules. Its even more amusing that Mr. Paul feels that since he's some 'big shot in Washingon, D.C.' that the rules some how dont apply to him. What if Mr. Paul had actually tried to smuggle a fake weapon or bomb in order to undermine the hated TSA search procedures? He often claims regulations and rules should be removed, even though those very regulations and rules were put in place for a good reason. Was he afraid the TSA 'pat down person' was both homosexual and would tweet later "Hey guys, Rand Paul's dick is so small I couldn't even find it"?

Airlines have rules to which passengers must follow. They have to pay for the ticket, must arrive before departure, must have they and their luggage checked for contra band (explosives, drugs, illegal immigrants, etc), and a few other things. You pay to have the convience of getting to your destination....quicker....than driving, riding the rail or by boat. Likewise, the company invests alot of resources into just one plane and would like their ROI. Strange that a 'conservative' would be against an airline wishing to protect its investment and 'future profit generating asset'.

I have more right to bitch about going on flights than Mr. Paul. I dont get to fly first class for starters. Nor are the airplanes designed with someone the size of a Wookie in mind. Imagine sitting in a kindergardener's chair for six hours. You cant push your legs in any direction except straight down. You cant lean back or to either side. When you get up, the cabin's ceiling is low enough that you must hunch down at the shoulders. And the restroom was designed with a kindergardener body size and mass in mind. Yeah, that's what a two hour plane trip feels like for someone six foot ten inchs tall! In my book, Rep. Paul has absolutely NOTHING to bitch about.

Jane, you ignorant slut!

Sen. Paul is a Congress critter. And Congress critters have different rules when traveling to and from the Nation's capital.

Yes indeed, Sen. Paul is a "big shot in Washington D.C." The only reason that Washington D.C. exists is to have a place for our legislature to meet.

Congress critters may NOT be impeded on the way to and from the capitol. And the only group allowed to question them is Congress itself. Not the TSA.

It was unconstitutional. Take a look at the English and French Revolutions as to why this is so important.

Oliver Cromwell would have loved you.

Would you like YOUR representatives to miss their votes because they were held up by the TSA?

DomKen -> RE: Is the end of TSA near? (1/24/2012 5:14:35 PM)

It would only have been a constitutional violation if he had been made late for a session by being arrested. He was not arrested and was free to leave and find another method of travel or go through the pat down.

Aylee -> RE: Is the end of TSA near? (1/24/2012 5:27:40 PM)

they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Granted this clause is usually invoked for speeding or drunk driving, but TSA does NOT have the authority to impede a Congress critter.

He was not free to leave for 2 hours.

This time he did not miss a vote.

This sets an egregious standard and will be abused if it is allowed to stand.

kdsub -> RE: Is the end of TSA near? (1/24/2012 6:12:07 PM)

If I have to take off my shoes...go through a body scanner... then be physically patted down...why should he be any different. What was the big deal... just let them do their job then be off to do yours.

Butch

About their speeches and debates. They can certainly be questioned in other regards.

He was free to leave. He lied when he claimed he was detained.

I've flown shitloads, about 200k miles to date.  When I heard the news the first thing I thought was "great grandstand move".  They aren't immune from FAA/TSA regulations.

I'm all for ditching the bogus things we have to go to nowadays on planes, but ya do that through changing regulations.

Oh yeah, I fly for business, so I have no choice.  I drive up to 8 hours and have to fly for the rest.

Yes, they are by dint of the Speech and Debate clause.

Even easier would be to completely defund the TSA. It is all Kabuki theater anyways.

I only fly for work as well. Luckily, mostly I drive for work.

Well not according to this article. He got stopped just like anyone else might have.

Apparently TSA disagrees.
It was unconstitutional. Take a look at the English and French Revolutions as to why this is so important.
Possibly, but if it is, it is unconstitutional for everyone, not just "congress critters"
Oliver Cromwell would have loved you.
???
Would you like YOUR representatives to miss their votes because they were held up by the TSA?
If getting held up at the airport for a couple of hours is going to cause my rep to miss his vote, then next time he better get his ass there earlier. Most people realize that shit happens and plan accordingly.

No. But it should be.

The entire (and expensive) Department of Homeland Security should be dismantled.

Bush is through with his two terms, and he doesn't have to pretend he's doing something anymore.

Yeah well just one attack, one bombing plot found out/stopped and the super-brave[8|] will be back to bush-level cowardice, demanding the government protect them.
