A 500 x 250 foot installation in Michigan is rated for a 400kW yield. That might not take the high school under the panels entirely off the grid but it should make a huge dent in its draw off the grid.

Now imagine if every flat roof in the US had such an installation. Would we need to send people deep into dangerous holes for coal? Would we need to pump poisonous chemicals into our water in order to frack natural gas deposits? Would we need to send billions and billions to hostile governments for oil?

So they are still paying a power bill?

Presumably the installation does not produce 400kW most of the time and so the school must still draw power off the grid at least some of the time.

I would like to see cost calculations of this thing. The technology has has been around long time (several decades). Dirty energy is relatively cheap, and this is the main reason why we use it. If one can show we can afford to run such devices I agree: good news. Otherwise, we have just DTE Energy PR campaign for government subsidies.

Yeah. We have these people called engineers who design roof systems to handle that sort of thing. Last year Chicago had 24 inches of snow in one day and I don't recall hearing about any roofs collapsing and most roofs in the city are flat.
