Daddy, where was all this..."concern" when *The Chimp* was in office?
And that's one of the kinder names.
"They can dish it out but they can't take it."
What's that saying about "karma?"

Calling it Karma?lol

More like,"you did it so we`ll do it too."

But again, some disrespect is earned.................through very hard work.

I have to defend popeye here.

First of all, while he may piss off some people, but in actuality he's the best political comedian that I've ever "heard" - bar none.  It's just that some people whose ox is being gored simply don't get it.

(I've always said that "lefties" don't have a sense of humor) [8D]

In my mind, this exempts him from the "respect" rule.

He never takes offense either, and I don't remember him actually personally insulting another poster.

Second, I see an attempt to impose this rule on him:

RULE 4: "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity's very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)

Popeye isn't a "conservative" or a Republican, and has given enough "proof" of his beliefs to anyone who isn't pretty much lost in an ideological hazy that this is true, yet some posters continue to use snark to call him a liar.  I see it as an attempt to impose Rule 4 onto him.  Which really doesn't apply, and which makes the entire thing funnier.

So, personally, I pretty much give him a "pass" on how he posts names about political figures, although Treasure asked him a few days ago to tone it down.

As far as I'm concerned ... he's probably one of the most entertaining and humorous posters CM has ever had.

I don't think it is becoming no matter which "side" does it.

Quite.

I agree wholeheartedly and I'll also add that I don't feel there's any horrendous crime in not giving a rat's ass WHAT the correct pronunciation of some people's name's are ... if it sounds like "ferret dick" that's good enough for me, especially if they're the first one to wrap themselves up in a chinese made flag or decry how their superior family values[8D]
They're as bullshit as a new york state thru-way speed trap.

Hey Owner ... Yeah ... the holidays were pretty busy for me. Had to do some traveling to line some things up for the coming year and catch up with an old friend who's launched a fascinating business ... I missed you guys though.

I disagree that just because there are schmucks out there that there cannot still be those who make thoughtful contributions.

Please do disagree with whoever said that. I certainly didn't. The vast majority of what's posted in here is reasonably thoughtful.

And, to repeat, I have no plans to muzzle anyone, to try to muzzle anyone, as you may remember from my post. All I can do is hope that those with some semblance of class muzzle themselves, in terms of maintaining some tiny amount of civility.

Yes, there will always be schmucks. Often, there's no point in engaging them, but...if someone starts a thread on disrespect, I'm gonna consider exercising my First Amendment rights and contributing something I think is worth pointing out. The alternative seems a bit passive to me.

We're agreed: "people are, and SHOULD be, free to do it." I'm not sure who's arguing against that proposition. You're absolutely right, they do have the right, just as they have the right to pee on their own shoes. That still doesn't mean every utterance, every cheap insult, every verbal race to the bottom, is worthwhile.

I hope that's clearer.

mcbride -> RE: Disrespect And Its Damage (1/27/2012 9:43:27 AM)

Yes, you could set the bar wherever you like it. I really don't expect these boards to turn into Alphonse and Gaston, and I certainly hope they don't. I'm only talking about some fraction of one percent of what gets posted. Personally, I think it's fair to call those individuals schmucks, and far less offensive than, say, 'libtard', which, the overworked mods tell me, is supposed to be grounds for them to pull the post, unlike 'schmuck'. But your mileage may vary, and you make a good point. I'll try to do better.

Agreed. Very much so.

So my best personal strategy is to IGNORE. Which means that every time we get bent out of shape that someone is using derogatory language etc., and spend time discussing that with either the people who are using that language, or with each other, we are, in a weird sort of way, giving the schmucks more power than they should have. Best strategy is to ignore, not just the bad language - but their comments entirely. If we all just stop responding or engaging those who lower the level of debate, they will get the signal soon enough. This satisfies the requirement of allowing them to speak however they want, but not demanding anything of us. In other words, we don't have to listen to them, or otherwise engage them.

I agree that every utterance is not worthwhile. So then only focus on what you find worthwhile.

Musicmystery -> RE: Disrespect And Its Damage (1/27/2012 9:51:12 AM)

Respect tells more about the person speaking than the person mentioned.

mcbride -> RE: Disrespect And Its Damage (1/27/2012 11:34:23 AM)

Dear Diary: fucktoyprincess and I agree again.

Actually, I do ignore their posts, except for the ones, once or twice a year, that misrepresent Canadian health care and need correcting. :)

Still, in a thread on disrespect, I can point that language out as an example, and still continue to ignore the offenders, I think...

popeye1250 -> RE: Disrespect And Its Damage (1/28/2012 12:46:50 AM)

I think you guys are onto something. We really shouldn't lower ourselves to the level of leftists, marxists and pinkos.
Hmm, 12 lefties against 1 Independent,.....sounds like a fair fight to me.

If free speech means anything, it means you can call any of them names.

Really?

So why then don't parents encourage their kids to answer back and call them rude names? Wouldn't that be teaching them the principles of free speech?

I disagree.. freedom of speech, or rather, freedom of personal self-expression carries with it something known as responsibility, because without that responsibility you cannot respect the freedom of others.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a socialist, a member of the Labour Party and that I have contact with politicians.

I am not a fan of people like Bush, nor Thatcher, nor Cameron, nor Blair, or anyone who identifies as a right winger.

BUT.. The part I object to is their particular ideology and what they stand for. On personal terms I have nothing against any of these people. This goes for all of you here who are also right wingers. I would buy you all a beer.

FURTHERMORE I respect all of the above politicians for one reason - they have got off their butts motivated by a desire to bring positive change and they have campaigned and they have won enough votes to achieve office.

That in itself deems all of them worthy of my respect, irrespective of their political stance or viewpoints.

Noting your nearly 26,000 posts in the forums and being hard-pressed to find a single thread in which you don't express your opinion....

Since you obviously have so much time on your hands, why dont you find a post where I state someone cannot express their opinion. [;)]

But, shall you actually bother to look, there are many threads I do not post too. Honestly, Treasure, lying does not become you.
