my assumption would be that your drivers for the cd/dvd drive do not have the interfaces  (api application programming interface) to tell the iphone software on a query what the track names are.  The manufacturer may have updates (for the machine drivers) that will open those interfaces.   drivers are little programs that sit between the actual mechanical device and the operating system to make it do stuff (like you drive things in different ways) oh wait, the on off button is on the left side on this one, and on the right on that one.   the os justs tells the driver, turn this fucking thing on.....same with the track names, the os when asked for track names by the iphone drivers would in turn query thru the os the names of the tracks to the actual device.

or try "Allok 3GP PSP MP4 iPod Video Converter 6.2.0603".
or send me an C-mail with your mail address in it so i can send you the program,
which can convert anything, to anything..
but in viedo has some (Iphone) which have MP4 with 4-5 options on tha screen wideth.
any question more please address my c-mail coz i dont pay attention to a tpic with more of 4 pages.

The problem seems to have somehow self corrected, the last 10 or so CD's have been properly labeled. Now I need to decide whether it is worth it to dump unlabeled ones and try to get them on the iPhone labeled.....lol,it is really silly cause for the most part I will simply press "shuffle" anyway.

iTunes actually uses CDDB, an online database, to identify tracks on a CD, not CD Text or other metadata encoded on the disc itself, so updated drivers won't help if you are already able to import the tracks. Assuming the issue was just a temporary network connectivity one that prevented access to the database, you can select the unlabeled tracks in iTunes and, with the unlabeled tracks still selected, go to the Advanced menu at the top of the window. From the menu select "Get Track Names" and OK any subsequent dialog about multiple items.

It sounds like it's already checked, but you might want to verify that the "Automatically retrieve CD track names from Internet" preference is selected under Edit > Preferences > General.

If that doesn't work, it's possible your tastes are esoteric enough that the CD you imported isn't in the database. If you want, you can fill in the information manually yourself and submit it.

My upgrade is in a few weeks, and I go back and forth in my head a few times daily about what the next phone will be. Would love to downgrade to a feature phone (call/text only), but would probably spend the 18mo til the next upgrade kicking myself for not getting the iPhone.....both kids have it and it is awesome.

My suggestion for an app - Temple Run. All the cool kids are playing it. Great for killing time waiting in line, etc.

I forget who said it in the thread - but cell phones have killed the joy of public transportation. A few years ago, it was my choice of travelling anywhere. Now it can be unbearable, hearing one side of a dozen different conversations.

Thanks for the tip. Switched to Verizon a few years back because of too many problems with AT&T. Was looking at droids last week (problems with current phone, and they said i could upgrade now to any phone *except* the iPhone, which can't be done until the official upgrade date...sigh) but the reviews on them were lukewarm. lots of complaints about the batteries.

Even the Iphone gets crappy reviews about the battery, its all about how you look at usage..

I have an extended battery because im addicted to tap ranch and reading on my phone it zaps the battery life like no tomorrow...

If i do moderate usage i barely use 10% life..

Some battery tips, if you dont live or go into a 4g area regularly, turn off 4g and be in 3g only, saves the battery alot.

Also play with the phones, droids are amazing (I adore the platform) choose which feels the best in your hand, do the cnet and xda reviews... and realize battery is always going to be a concern on any phone that isnt basic...

Also if you have an unlimited plan with data, DO NOT get rid, or upgrade unless you can keep it, I come in with about 15 gigs of data a month and would be paying out my rear in overage charges...

good point. we lost unlimited data on one number when switching over to an iphone...forgot that would happen with this upgrade as well.

Okay,a little update on my music "issues",as I said there was a"self" correction. My Cd's loaded nicely, labeled and all...I spent the better part of an evening laoding music to my lap top,had gone thru about half of my automotive CD collection(as opposed to stuff that is in my house, that I don't listen to too much anymore) when I took a break and looked at what I had.5 gigs of data, and only half done....
Obviously, with an 8 gig phone this was going to need to be re planned. So what I wound up doing was putting like 2 gigs of music on the iPhone...and downloading, for now,Pindar. Not bad,and free,I know there are some pay apps....with no commercial breaks, but so far Pindars infrequent and real short(30 second) spot is not bothering me at all.
I think I need an i(?) Pod strictly for music.......lol.

A s i said from the outset,I'm a technophobe...so I never considered size,lol.Well half the auto collection was some 600 cuts,almost a full 5 Gigs.....now all of a sudden I realized the limitations of an 8 gig phone......oh well,live and learn.

Heh. Still, jokes aside, it's not a particularly unique approach. Other software, including Windows Media Player, does the same thing to identify tracks. CD Text was a much later addition to the standard for Audio CDs, so there are plenty of discs with no info that would still need to be looked up if you tried to rely on it. Plus, the databases often have more information. Perhaps a bit oddly, iTunes actually can write discs with CD Text, just not read it.

Pindar? Out of curiosity, did you perhaps mean Pandora? Or am I not up to speed on streaming music apps? If you are happy with that and aren't hitting any data limits with your carrier using it, it's probably not a bad solution.

Another option would be to make the files of the songs you have smaller. By default, iTunes currently imports tracks with a 256 kbps bit rate, which is probably the setting you used. That rate can be reduced while still maintaining decent audio quality, which is useful when trying to squeeze a library into limited space. There is actually an option in iTunes to automatically convert songs into smaller 128 kbps files when transferring them to an iPhone. Using that option would roughly halve the size of your files.

If you are satisfied with the sound quality of Pandora, which uses 64 kbps HE-AAC, you could reduce the bit rate of your songs even further, to 80 or 64 kbps HE-AAC. The lower rates don't have an automatic conversion option, so you have to create tracks at the lower bit rate yourself. To do so, you can import CDs at the lower rate or, for tracks you have already ripped, use the "Create AAC version" item under the Advanced menu to transcode the file. In both cases, you first need to set the desired encoder settings, which are found in the "Import Settings…" (Edit > Preferences > Import Settings). Using 64 kbps could reduce those 5 GB to less than 1.5 GB.

Still, the 8 GB in the low-end iPhone 4 is a bit limiting if you are using it for media. Over the course of a two-year contract, $100 extra dollars for the improved camera and processors, Siri, and 16 GB capacity of the entry 4S is probably the better deal. Too late to exchange it? :)
