Marc, I was going to get back into this thread, and try to turn Lucy's comment about, 'staying here until we get it right,' into another teachable moment, but dammit, you have it covered. [:D]

What`s there to learn about being crass and/or pandering?

"Santorum trashes Gingrich moon colony"

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/01/26/santorum-trashes-gingrich-moon-colony/

Speaking before 150 students at Florida State University, Santorum said that it was time that politicians were honest about the fact that the debt crisis is simply too big to consider such grand proposals.

"The idea at this point that we're going to create any new expansive plan to create a new mission and fund that mission in any way that could lead to a deployment or development of that mission, I just think is similar to what Speaker Gingrich said the other night when he said he was going to create a new Social Security plan," Santorum said, referencing a heated back-and-forth between him and Gingrich over the speaker's plan for providing a private Social Security option

" Santorum: Gingrich moon plan "crass politics"

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57367006-503544/santorum-gingrich-moon-plan-crass-politics/

"Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday accused rival Newt Gingrich of "crass politics" for visiting Florida's NASA-dependent "Space Coast" and promising to build a permanent U.S. base on the moon in eight years.

Santorum said he saw no way for the deficit-strapped country to undertake a moon colony in the near future.

"The idea that anybody is going out and talking brand new, very expensive schemes to spend more money at a time when we do not have our fiscal house in order, in my opinion, is playing crass politics," the former Pennsylvania senator told students at a town hall meeting at Florida State University.

Gingrich, who described his moon plan at a campaign event on Wednesday, is "not being realistic with the people of this country as to the nature and threat of the (fiscal) problem," Santorum said.

Don't worry Mike according to Newt's plan, we're only going to export the Republican part. So none of the social ills will make it off the planet.

Gee, Owner59. Were you not planning on this becoming a thread where cheap shots from the left were answered by rational conservative ideas, persuasively presented, and contrasting very nicely with the confusion of the snarkers?

Maybe head over to the flag-burning thread. OWS is about to commence trashing the Democrats who run Oakland.

Doesn't it feel like you have box seats at the best fucking roller derby match ever?

My only remaining question is when do they throw the giant bowie knife in the cage?

Actually, Helium-3 is the most likely substance to be mined on the moon. The Chinese, Indians and Russkies are aparently in the planning stages.

And until such time as they're past the planning stages, there's little point in mining the stuff. [;)]
Good point, though. I was forgetting about that.

You mean, the Moon really is a balloon?

I'm definitely no fan of Gingrich, and I like Santorum even less. But I do think it's way past time that we had a Moon base. When I was a kid, I remember the Moon landings, and it was commonly believed that we would have a Moon base by the year 2000, along with manned missions to Mars by now. We haven't been the Moon since 1972. That's a disgrace, especially since they wasted all that money on useless space shuttles. Now, the Chinese and the Russians will beat us there, and we'll be in even deeper trouble as a nation.

Well if the Chinese get there first, at least your Astronauts will have a takeaway to go to. [8D]

You mean they'll have a dome with a bunch of roast ducks hanging in the window? I wonder how they'll deal with the line cooks continually blazing Pall Malls ... None of that seems to be spelled out in the Space Treaty
Course on treaties, the Chinese have the ultimate solution "just wait till nobody's looking"

I say we support this with any candidate available, AND we start a list of new completely unfounded prejudices to heap on people that move into space, I'll start

Space people can't dance.

We`re have a fine discussion without you.If you feel the need to distract from it and talk about yourself, please start your own thread to do that.

newty just announced that "cash and prizes" would spur space technology..........[8|]

What a dope.......I hope he wins.

How about cash and prizes for, something really important.

How about a moon mission level effort to make 25% to 1/3 of our energy from solar/wind/hydro/tidal/geo-thermal sources.

It should be as huge and as intense and regarded as just as important as our man on the moon(and back)mission was.....cuz it is.

That's the best thing about permanent extraterrestial settlements: they'll create whole new minorities to take the piss out of.
(The long term effects of living in lunar gravity or zero g at one of the lagrange points are likely to be pretty devastating in the long run.)

Owner59 -> RE: newt Moon-beam want to go to the moon again.....and..... (2/2/2012 9:10:43 AM)

They`ll start calling us landlubbers..............

It`ll be awful!.[:D]

"Earthworm" was a term of abuse I remember seeing space colonists use for us lot in a comic I read as a kid. I quite like that one.

I agree, we can't just all walk around with a chip on cause we got a child support judgement. Mitt Romney won't even notice it's being added to his platform. And if he does, we'll just say it's to fix the holes in his Magic Safety Net For The Poor (MSFTP... NOT JUST for transferring files out of Windows<tm> anymore). There problem solved

That's a great idea... we form a whole Lunar Culture based on some comic... Hey how about Flesh Gordon<tm> That'll keep Newt's little moonsuit full of steam and wingnut piss for years.

Moonhead -> RE: newt Moon-beam want to go to the moon again.....and..... (2/2/2012 3:34:47 PM)

Come now: do you think the Great God Porno would want anything to do with Newt?
