We just had a judge in this area removed from the bench and (I think) disbarred for being drunk on the bench. It's causing a nightmare because now everyone who was convicted in his court since Christ was a corporal is appealing their convictions/sentences.

Hmmmm... The Democrats don't seem to have any problem with being tested, and the Radicals do...

Mayhap that's really the 'Prohibition Tea' Party?

They're expected to turn up to work pissed over here, particularly if they're judging a rape case.

Maybe they're a "cold tea" party in the Arab sense?

After a federal judge blocked a much broader drug-test rule in Florida, Pennsylvania is taking a more careful approach. Instead of mandating drug tests for all welfare recipients, Pennsylvania plans to randomly test only those with a felony drug conviction within the past five years and those on probation for such offenses.

Officials are taking it slow. A pilot program has started in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill County, which could pave the way for a statewide program this summer if it proves cost effective.

Officials are taking it slow. A pilot program has started in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill County, which could pave the way for a statewide program this summer if it proves cost effective.

Opponents claim the proposals are unfair and not cost effective. A Feb. 3 brief by the Center for Law and Social Policy, a low-income advocacy nonprofit, cited a 1996 study that found the proportion of welfare recipients with a substance abuse problem is consistent with the proportion of nonwelfare recipients with the same.

The group said the tests cost between $35 and $76 each to administer, and described them as an "inefficient use of taxpayer money."
"Since few substance abusers are identified in tests, but many are tested, the cost of catching a drug abuser may run between $20,000 and $77,000 per person," the group claimed.

The cost-benefit aspect is one Pennsylvania officials will examine in the pilot program. The Pennsylvania program stems from a bill passed last year.

If those bolded figures are correct, there is no possible way anyone could say this program will make money.

Florida had only 2% of welfare recipients test positive for drug use, which meant the program COST the taxpayers $200,000 instead of saving money.

Note - 9% of the general population admits to using drugs.

I believe gary hart issued a similar type of blustering challange when confronted with his womanizing. Give him a cup and test his piss and if he test positive require him to pay back all of his pay he recieved from the government during his carear in public service.

Or just test every 4 hours or so......they are working for us after all and using GOP logic on voter fraud, wouldn`t just one boozed up lawmaker...............be one to many?

Myself, I'd much rather have a pissed up Churchill in number ten than a clean and sober Cameron, but that's just me.

Perhaps you do not know enough about churchill?

Since your taxes go to pay for politician's wages your logic would follow that all public employees be tested?

If welfare recipients are tested based on the fact that they get a government check, then anyone who gets a government check should be tested. Poor grandma.

This would also include all of the board mambers of any corp. that gets federal subsidies like gm,ford,b of a, adm....and the list goes on.

Eventually everyone would be tested. Test one, test em all.

Not for nothing Liz... we're living in an economy where I personally know at least 1/2 a dozen former colleagues who are currently receiving one form of assistance or another. The slogan arrogant. All the people I know on public assistance have earned it many times over in terms of the taxes they've paid while working the 20 - 30 years of their professional lives.

I agree and if it is found to be unconstitutional to test welfare recipients, they should stop drug testing all potential employees unless there is a safety issue such as driving/operating heavy machinery or health care workers.

Not sure, but I think that some here might not be getting the point of the above post.

How many of you are/were or were not drug tested in your current or a previous job? The point here being that if most or nearly all are subjected to this in the private sector, then ...

That understood, I would suggest that two wrongs don't make a right, and if some bit of fuss over this issue were to resuscitate the previously moribund discussion of constitutional issues of any drug testing other than for cause or for jobs that would involve danger to others, such as mentioned above;
