Once a supporter of stem-cell research, the newty changes positions in a desperate move to sway fundies.....

Shame on him.

"Gingrich vows to ban embryonic stem-cell research, questions in vitro practices"

"LUTZ, Fla. — As former House speaker Newt Gingrich courts evangelical voters in advance of Tuesday’s Florida primary, he is drawing an increasingly hard line against the use of embryonic stem-cell research — a position that contrasts not only with that of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, but also with statements that Gingrich himself has made on the subject in the past.

Speaking at a Baptist church in Winter Park on Saturday, the former speaker received a standing ovation when he declared that embryonic stem-cell research amounts to “the use of science to desensitize society over the killing of babies.”

And in a news conference Sunday, he said he would ban all embryonic stem-cell research, including that done on discarded embryos created by in vitro fertilization.

There seems to be a massive amount of 'fundies' that have an Amish-Fetish when it comes to biological science. That the idea of this sort of technology and knowledge scares them so much that they must do anything and everything to destroy it.....least anyone find it to be useful for mankind as a whole. In doing this, they are forcing jobs that would be accessible here within the States to be moved to another country where apparently the people in that country aren't so ignorant on the benefits of advancement. Further more, when those discoveries take place (which Stem Cell Research has already done in the last decade), it has the potential to create whole new industries (at a macro level) or new products/services (at a micro level) to potential consumers. This would lead to additional jobs being created.

I can only guess that fundies want more jobs to be lost here in the USA and giving to other countries...

It's worse than that: they also want a ban on anything developed with the use of stem cell research at any stage.  That would not only pull a lot of important medicines off the shelves: as they themselves have noted, it would also ban Pepsi!

OTOH, to be fair, if you believe that something is wrong in principle, the idea that it creates jobs is not going to change your stand.  A lot of people want to see an end to the international arms trade, which indubitably supports some of the last major engineering industries left in the US.

The argument is always that you don't shut the relevant industries down, you redirect them to making or doing something ethically acceptable.  In the case of the arms factories, it might be wind and wave energy systems: in the case of biotech, research into making stem cells without using embryonic tissue.  Which is indeed worth doing, and is going on, because embryonic tissue is a limited resource and uses for stem cells are increasing explosively.

Maybe Gringrich thinks that stem cells can be mined on the moon as well.

Great post and couldn`t agree more about principals,right/wrong and living with our choices.

One point tho on the stem-cell research issue. The right-to-life crowd has latched onto stem cell research and claims it is a right to life issue, where nothing could be further from the truth.

The stem cells left over from in vitro fertilization are what is at issue.

These are left over eggs that will never become viable unless their owners(the parents) choose to have more kids and implant them.

Otherwise they sit frozen,virtually forever.

.

Some arguments I`ve heard say,"well it`s human "life" right, and would be person if implanted and doesn`t die, right?

With this logic, all left over eggs, after a couple was successful at getting prego, must also be made viable, otherwise we`re taking a life.

Which is fucking ridiculous.

Anyone who is against creating in vitro fertilized eggs for any reason,is against in vitro fertilization, period and is against the thousands of couples who have had kids with this method and ultimately,is against those thousands of kids who would otherwise, not be born.
