RexCorvus -> RE: Bereavement Airfare? (1/31/2012 9:01:41 AM)

I'm sorry for your (anticipated) loss. Last year when my wife's father died suddenly I had to arrange a flight very quickly (under 24 hours). I called a couple airlines and said "My father-in-law died this morning, and I need to get on a plane to <his home state> ASAP". They quoted me the bereavement rate right off, and I was able to fly relatively cheaply. The airline I ended up going with (Delta?) did need me to provide the name of the funeral home that was handling services - I don't think they actually checked up to make sure I wasn't scamming them, but just needed to fill it in on the computer screen (the lady I talked to was very nice about it). I would definitely advise calling a few different airlines - the price difference for me was something like $200 for basically the exact same trip. It's also possible you'd get a better deal via Orbitz or Travelocity or whatever even without any kind of bereavement discount - I was in a hurry and didn't have time to do a lot of comparison shopping (although something in the back of my mind says we actually did look on a couple sites before calling, just to make sure there wasn't a massive difference in price).
