Let's assume that Romney wins the GOP nomination.  He'll have to pick a VP candidate.

Gingrich is the interesting choice.  If Romney picks him, then he'll have an attack dog for a VP, similar to how Agnew was that for Nixon - someone to stoop to levels that the presidential nominee wouldn't.

Newt would do a great job at that.  Plus, making him a VP candidate might heal the fissures in the GOP and make the conservatives feel they're not being marginalized.  The only drawbacks are:

1. Newt has more baggage than the rest of the candidates combined.  He might take the focus away from Obama's record and onto his own.
2. Newt's good at campaigning but lousy at leading, if the GOP gets elected.
3. By the time Romney gets the nod, I doubt anyone in his campaign could stomach working with Newt.

So, does anyone here think it's a viable possibility?

I really don't think so, Steven. I think he can't get out of
the race quick enough for powerbrokers in
the party and a large percentage of the rank
and file. It's going to be good riddance to them
when he's out, they aren't going to want
him back in.
The practical reason he's such a divisive
person. I think they'll feel like more people
would come out to vote against him than
would ever come out to vote for him.
He wouldn't be in the top spot but neither
was Palin and people came out to vote
against her more than McCain.
Newt is hated by to many people within
the party. He was despised by the men
of his own party who served with him.
And he's got all that baggage, not just his
personal life, financial stuff.
I also don't think Romney would agree to
it. I assume he would have a say in the
matter. Who in their right mind would want
a egotistical maniac like Newt as their VP?
It would be like having Iago as VP.
He would upstage Romney at every turn.
The press would follow Newt and his three
wives and I'm sure Newt would give them
red meat regularly. I don't think he would
be able to take the subordinate position.
He would consider himself a co-president.
In politics yesterdays enemy is today's
friend but I think there is genuine dislike
between Romney and Gingrich. I can't see
them biting the bullet like Obama and Clinton.
And Obama refused to offer Hilarey the vice
presidency. I don't think Romney would offer
Newt any position. Newt isn't good at
making friends. And Obama and Clinton
did respect the other. I think Newt thinks
Romney is a lightweight and Romney thinks
Newt is repugnant. They are both correct
in these assessments.
And I think that whole we need Newt as a
attack dog think comes from the Joe Wilson
crowd who want to see the President
disrespected in the debates. Newt wouldn't
be debating Obama and it's going to take
more than the yahoo vote to get Romney
elected.

Sure, let him do it! With his ethics, he'll end up like Spiro did!

I'd like to see him pick congressman, (Lt. Col.) Allan West.
Or even Ron Paul.

With the way Gringrich has been behaving since before the primaries started, would any potential nominees want him as a veep? I really can't see that myself.

His grandiose sense of self importance rules him out as VP.

Real Time with Bill Maher (1-27-12) - Newt Gingrich is a Narcissist

Gingrich would hurt the Republican cause as Veep and possibly tip the general to Obama.

His ability to see into the future and know exactly his movements on a given day are nothing short of remarkable. I think we all should just prostrate ourselves to the abilities of the fat one from georgia.

Newt is too toxic.

Not that Romney is much better.  I don't know who he should pick as a VP but the choice may well make or break his election.  The Republicans are in a very weird posistion.  Usually a sour economy would guarantee a loss for the incumbant but the Republicans "Southern Strategy," successful in the short term, is now coming back to haunt them.  They are losing fiscal conservatives who increasingly can't stomach being allied with the "Jesus is Lord," wing of the party.

I think the Republican Party is headed for a break up.  This may be good for the Democrats in the short term but if the fiscal consevatives succeed in freeing themselves from the Jesus Freaks, they will then be free to align themselves with the more moderate wing of the Democrats.  The moderate Democrats are more fiscally conservative than the farther left elements of their party but so far have stuck with them because they are repulsed by the anti-civil rights stance of the Jesus Freaks.

Hang on, is this "moderate Democrats" as in the hard right freaks they have to have in the party because they're not Republicans like that twat Leiberman before he went independent?
I suppose if those are the centrists, it becomes a bit clearer why the monetarist right of centre Kenyan is seen as an eeevil commie socialist...

By moderate Democrats I mean people who are pro civil rigths (ie pro abortion rights, pro gay marriage) and/or not particularly religions (ie keep ID out of the science classes) but also tend to be more fiscally consevative (in other words, they don't believe that increased taxes and regulations are the answer to our econimc woes).

Both political parties are alliances of people who happen to agree on more than which they disagree.  People will hold their nose (so to speak) over some issues in order to pursue others.  For example, many fiscal conservatives will put up with the Jesus Freaks if it will get the fiscal policies they want passed.  Likewise many fiscal consevatives will hold their nose over the Democrats fiscal policies because their notions on civil rights are more important to them.  It is all a matter of priorities.  "Moderates" will accept the "Bad" with the Good" of a party's platform, independents are people who are simply unwilling to officially join one party or another because they don't like the "Bad" that comes along with the "Good."

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  Advances in technology now allow people to bypass the old media in getting their message out.  This allows the possibility (if not the probability) of a true independent candidate being elected.  I believe that a candidate who was fiscally consevative (lower taxes, lower government spending) but socially liberal (pro gay marriage) could weld together an alliance of the middle and leave both the Democrats and the Republicans flat on their asses and wondering what just happened.

I'm not saying it will happen... but it could.
