Status: offline 		In the light of the news that Santorum spent $15 million on his campaigning in January do Americans feel this is acceptable ?

Is it just a case that he or she with the most TV coverage will end up in the White House ?

We dont have exactly the same situation here, as each party elects its own leader via the party network. We also have a set limit to spend on our election campaigns per party. I wonder if any of you think a limit is a better idea than the "No limit" decision your Supreme Court decided on in 2010. (I think it was 2010)

Status: offline 		I think a limit in both time and money is needed badly...especially time. I'd like to see a 6 week limit on the primaries and another 6 weeks for the general Presidential election. That would be plenty of time to organize, select, and get their message out.

I don't know what would be an appropriate limit on the money however...I'm open to ideas. Too little and the process may not be practical...too much does leave the possibility of buying an election.

I just wanted to add...he could spend 20 times that amount and still would not be nominated let alone elected President...so he is a bad example...There are better ones when it comes to buying elections...Bush and his organization was very good at it.

Money is not everything but it is very important of course.

That said, campaigning via media comments tends to start once the last election has finished.

That's a LOT of money for all of what? Maybe 30,000 votes?

How many middle class salaries ya suppose that was while running around to every pile of haybales in 4 states declaring the President a failure?

Well using 50k as a 'for instance' figure, it's 300.
So Rick Santorum SO FAR, has thrown three hundred american jobs in the toilet.

  Or if you looked at it as start-up money for a decent business plan in tech manufacture, it's even more jobs I worked not that long ago for a start-up that in it's first round funding (approximately the same amount of VC $) employed 800 - 1000 employees in it's first year.
   But we all know the 'job creators' can afford this remake of "Deliverance" in HD... because they're sitting on all the bailout and stimulus money they've raked in claiming 'low consumer confidence as the reason they arbitrarily refuse to return it to the economy.

2008 -- $744,985,625 ($656,357,572 + $88,626,223 + $1,830) / $50,000 = 14,900  (SOURCE)

2012 -- $125,225,410 / $50,000 =  2,505  (SOURCE)

Status: offline 		Outspending your opponent is no guarantee of winning on election day. I'm glad of that, since it has been reported a number of times that President Obama plans to raise and spend a billion in the effort to keep his job.

It doesn't matter how much you spend getting the message out there, if you don't have a message that is going to resonate positively with a majority of the voters, or create a negative resonance around your opponent if the best you can do is run as ineffective, but the lesser of evils.

I'm a free speech kind of guy. I don't see a law limiting the time allowed for campaigning, passing the First Amendment test.

I also don't see how spending limits could be effective, as our system stands. Parties outside the campaigns have the right to voice an opinion, and buy the airtime and netspace to make that opinion known.

Well okay then: how about the $29 million the chimp spent campaigning in 2000? There's a precedent there for somebody getting sworn in without actually winning the election, after all.
Santorum just has to get the supreme court and the electoral college on his side if he wants the job. (And maybe the governor of Florida...)

Yes, I just got an email from him complaining because Mittens said the election was about defeating Obama. Duh. And then goes on to ask for more money to he can defeat the republicans. He says "Last night Romney summed it up in one line -- for them, it's all about beating one man and sending his family packing from the White House" Now I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that most elections are about getting one man in and one man out. And I am willing to bet, for him, this election is about keeping one in. So what's the difference?

Status: offline 		Although all the bullshit political ads annoy the hell out of me the idea of restricting free speech is dangerous and scares the shit out of me.

The best solution that I can see is to require complete openess (eg posted online) in both sources of funding and spending.  That way we can see who is actually behind a candidate.
