Insisting that those on food stamps are dependent is, again, due to a lack of knowledge.

More doublespeak, Tazzy. If you are relying on government assistance to put food on your table, you are dependent by definition.

tazzygirl -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 9:25:03 AM)

How many businesses rely on government assistance?

How many politicians rely on government assistance?

How many of either of those groups gives up that assistance?

How many people dropped food stamps in the past few months?

The ability of the poor to give up food stamps speaks to their lack of dependency.

But I do like how you place that dependency label on those making the least when those who make the most get the benefits.

TheHeretic -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 9:35:23 AM)

Tazzy, I find your original statement to be bullshit, and your attempts to make it about something else even more so. You said that giving people government food handouts keeps them from becoming dependent on government. Either make that case, possibly with a new thread, or take this opportunity to revise what you meant.

tazzygirl -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 9:37:05 AM)

I made that case. Someone dependent doesnt give up the benefit. They get kicked off. I gave proof that the benefits are easier to keep, yet the numbers are dropping.

Balls back in your court.

Im done here. My case is made. If you wish to continue debating this, you can start a separate thread.

From another thread:

Conventional wisdom says that the incumbent gets the blame for the economy.  Not true now.  Bush still gets blame for driving us into the ditch, and Obama gets blame for not really getting us out.  And, thanks to Gingrich's tireless efforts, Romney gets blame even though he wasn't even in office, for symbolizing the MBAs who squeeze the jobs out of the economy.

If the economy isn't the issue, what will be?

Obama really can't trumpet the wonders he's done for the economy, because it still sucks.  Romney can't say much because his plan will consist basically of saying he's an MBA and knows how to run things.  After Gingrich trashed Bain, it would be trivial for Obama to do the same.

So what else IS there?  The GOP candidate desperately needs an issue.  Demonizing Islam won't work for Romney, although Gingrich might get some mileage out of it if he's candidate.  Neither Gingrich nor a Mormon could run on family values.

So what else could there be?

I believe all of those issues have merit, but the fact that I don't have a Domme who enjoys cuckolding....well, seriously folks....I mean, let's deal with basic facts here....what the Hell could POSSIBLY be more pressing?

slvemike4u -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 9:41:15 AM)

Time to punt Rich,this one is a non-starter.

slvemike4u -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 9:46:35 AM)

This is really simple Rich assistance does not necessarily denote dependence.
Dependence is a whole nother level than just needing a little help.Were you to demonstrate a significant jump in the welfare rolls you could make an argument about dependence.....food stamps are merely assistance.
This is a classic apples and oranges argument.
Tazzy takes it by a Touchdown.

SilverBoat -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 9:58:39 AM)

Yeah, it'd seem obvious to anybody but an id-iot (in the freudian sense) rightwingnut that Tazzy pretty much steamrolled the so-called 'conservative' argument ...

TheHeretic -> RE: What's the issue? (2/5/2012 10:18:28 AM)

Ok. If the spirited discussion is going here, then somebody needs to go start a thread, and make a case that depending on the government to ensure you have food on the table isn't a form of dependency, and that the act of becoming independent, as when a child grows up and moves means they were never dependent in the first place. I see res ipsa loquitur.

Steve, my apologies for the derail. Can we clean up the mess by suggesting a Republican issue in the race could be a contrasting question on the role of government in our lives? Is it the servant of the people, or the nanny?

Welfare vs. work. Now the racebaiters are going to call it "dogwhistling," but the record number of Americans on food stamps isn't an achievement for this administration to be proud of.

Considering the alternative is people going hungry I think it is something to be proud of. We could of course try the Hoover model of letting people starve to death but I think once is enough.
