Status: offline 		I watched the first season and loved it. Am waiting on the second one to start. Haven't read the books though .... are you reading the books? Several people I know have tried to read the books, but couldn't get into them, yet loved the first season.

Status: offline 		I tried to read them. The problem is that there are so many characters that most of the first book seemed like just a list of who was who. And I couldn't keep them straight. I'm told that once you get past that, it's pretty engrossing.

Status: offline 		: ( That's not good. I hate books where I have to keep lists and/or maps. (although there have been a few Agatha Christie books, and some "Hobbit" related books that I've made exceptions for)

Status: offline 		Regarding the books: just don't go there. The first three are quite good. The fourth, which we readers waited for, is. A rambling atrocity. I didnt bother with the fifth. GRRM is never going to finish the series, ever. He's lost in worldbuilding, and has lost track of the important characters. There's entire blocks of fans that savage him on the net for being a sellout.

The TV series looks beautifully done, and the first few books are totally engrossing but very complex, with many charcaters and lots going on that isn't relevant to the main story. LOTS.

The saga of books four getting split into two books...gah. anyway! Watch tv, it's a time saver :)

I've read the books and I'm watching the series.
All I can say is I enjoy both. I admit I'm
skeptical that GRRM will ever finish the thing
though some are hopeful the series will push
him to.
There was a big mess with the timeline
and splitting the four book into two books
The fourth and fifth books are not as good
as the first and third book(the best IMO) but
they both contain very good writing and
interesting stuff.
I don't find the number of characters overwhelming.
I don't regret finding the books and
reading them at all.
The series is very enjoyable though as with
the books it's all very subjective. Some people
just don't like or get fantasy books or movies
or tv series. And there are dragons and magic
swords, so be warned if you have a aversion to
that sort of thing.
But there are pleasures in the books that will
never be found in the series. I don't regret
reading them. I have in fact reread them.
They aren't easy books but most really good
books aren't. I don't know how quick someone
who hasn't read the books can get into the
series. Second season starts in April, I
wouldn't want to jump into it without
seeing the first. HBO's website has additional
info on the characters.

Status: offline 		When and IF he finishes the series, I will bother with the fifth book. I read an excerpt on Amazon, and the story (about Tyrion) was interesting, but no, I'm not going there. At the end of the fourth book, I realized that I wouldn't find out what happened to Arya until the book after the one that just came out. That was what, three years ago? So another three years until that cliffhanger is settled?

Nope. I will wait until it's all wrapped up in a shiny package.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the heads up, Blushes.  I've just download Episode 1  - it looks like my sort of escapism!

Still wondering where it was filmed.  It could be Wales - Snowdonia most likely, or the Scottish Highlands.  Difficult to say.  Scenery in NZ looks similar, but the trees there are a dead giveaway.

Status: offline 		What I'm skeptical of is him being able to wrap things
up with just two books. The fifth book left me thinking
it would take at least three more books.
If he does it in two books they're gonna have
to be huge books and even then.
GRRM is in his sixties and considering when he
wrote the first book to the most recent I think
readers can be forgiven for feeling a little
anxious.
A friend of mine has said she will never read
a series that isn't completed again after her
experience

Love the first four books, but despite having the fifth since the day it came out, still haven't even managed to get halfway through. Martin has lost something.
Loved the tv show, I feel like they did a marvelous job casting.

FOr those of you with kindles- DO download his short stories. They are amazing.

Status: offline 		I've not read the books, or seen the tv series, but I have it on very good authority from my sister-in-law that it's very good and as good as the books.
It's not everyone's sort of thing, but if you like that sort of stuff, then it's definitely recommended.

Status: offline 		I'm surprised Master hasn't chimed in on this one. He's read the books and liked them. I haven't but I've seen a few episodes of the series on HBO. The series is interesting but I admit I've only seen about 4 episodes and haven't watched recently.

Status: offline 		Both the books and the tv series have their flaws, but I am a huge fan of both.

I am hoping the problem with the last two books is that the series is in an uncomfortable middle section where he is setting his pieces into place for a grand finale. There was still a lot to enjoy even in those books, so while i have concerns, I am still looking forward to finding out what happens.
