Porn does a lot of harm... I waste valuable fap-time while trying to find something decent to watch for 30 seconds. Often I have to resort to gay male bondage stuff, since I can't stand the shit that portrays 'dominant' women wearing cuffs/collar and eventually being 'forced' to do things by a 'submissive' male. That sort of role reversal on-the-fly is extremely upsetting and makes me fly into a rage.

When I fly into a rage, people tend to get hurt. If an unlucky submissive just happens to be in the way... you can figure it out.

"Harm" is a rather aggressive term. I think porn has done a tremendous amount to *mislead*, and that has made things a lot more difficult for those of us who actually do BDSM in real time.

Agreed. And proof of this:

Putting the archaeology hat on for a mo', I don't think the cave painting which appeared roughly 40,000 years ago in France/Spain qualifies because these works are interpreted as involving religion. Most of the images involve animals so if it did then we would have to think that our ancestors were big into bestiality! [8D] Same thing with the primative venus figurines which invoked fertility. I think porn came about more in ancient Greek/Roman times when there was a much greater sense of realism in art, and images of a very explicit nature were found in Pompeii etc. even though it still had some loose association with religion. Maybe thats a new definition for porn: explicit sexual imagery sans religious belief...

I think it's very hard to know. It could be that some of the imagery on those cave walls was religious, some was sexual, and some had another purpose entirely. I don't agree that sexual and religious intentions are always mutually exclusive, either. Tell that to a Tantric Buddhist!

About porn in general, I agree with others who have said that it's fine as a fantasy but shouldn't be used as a guide to reality. Personally, I like to fantasise, and a well-done BDSM video clip sometimes makes a good springboard. I like it best when there's a sense of emotional connection between the dominant and the submissive (not necessarily love or intimacy - fear on one side and sadistic delight on the other is even better), when the characters come across as having personalities, when the action is fairly hard and heavy, and when the situation being depicted is realistic on its own terms. If you're going to make a video clip of a ruthless female interrogator working over a prisoner of war, neither of them should look like a glamour model, and the interrogator should be wearing something more plausible than a skimpy latex pseudo-uniform.

I like to think that not too many people expect real-world BDSM to be just like BDSM porn, but obviously it does happen. I suspect, though, that a bigger problem on forums like this one is the occasional friction between people who want to talk about fantasy (without necessarily taking it seriously) and people who would rather stick to reality.
