I just read that Mitt Romney spoke at Arapahoe High School a couple of hours ago. That's maybe five miles for me, if that. Had I known in time, I might have gone to see him. Just to see him, even though there's no way in Hell that I could support him or any of the other GOP candidates. How about you? If you could conveniently see a Presidential candidate speak whose views you disagree with, would you?

My friends and I have cardboard flip-flop costumes,much like the walking billboards you see people wearing w/ adverts on front and back. We wouldn`t go in tho,just hang outside and make a ruckus.

I guess it would depend on how much I disagreed with him or her, Steve. Michele Bachmann could come ringing my doorbell, and I'd just let the dogs bark at her throught the window until she went away. Same with anyone reaching out to the religious right. I've heard it, I don't care. I would certainly go see the President speak, and wouldn't be there to heckle, or in hopes of creating a YouTube sort of incident.

I've done that years ago, and found the crowds just too damned creepy. Most of them seemed brainwashed, like religious cultoids. Nowadays, I figure there's enough video, audio, and text of the candidates to decipher what they mean from what they say, so being there in person to observe then isn't all that important.

No. But because I do not want to deal with all the rigamarole of security and all of the other people. I would not head out to see a candidate that I agreed with either. For the same reason. Too many people, too much rigamarole.

FR You're just going to get the stump speech usually. Factor that in with the bother of getting there, getting in and getting out again it would be more trouble than it's worth to me whether I like the candidate or not. Hearing a president speak would be worth more of an effort or being in the audience for a debate. But even then I would consider how far and complicated as the largely deciding factors.

I'd like to but when they were here in Myrtle Beach the News said there were only 3,000 seats and you had to go across the street and go through security and then wait there for two hours and then when the candidates were all in the building they'd march you over, frisk you again and let you in.Why don't they just have outdoor rallys? I would have loved to boo NOOT! And applaud Ron Paul. I'm not a republican but I think Mitt would make a pretty good president. ANYONE would be better than that pos in there now.

No. In this era of television, there are plenty of opportunities to hear them speak that do not require my taking my time to attend live. It would also depress me to see all the people who came out to support him. Not to mention I would have to bite my tongue through the entire thing so as not to heckle loudly every time I heard something that I disagreed with (and thereby running the risk of getting beat up by the supporters). I would rather spend my time helping out at the local soup kitchen, or something useful. Time is limited, after all. But would I go to hear someone speak who I believed in. Who was truly motivational, inspirational, etc.? Yes. That would be meaningful. (And it wouldn't even have to be a politician).

Yes. Because the truth of the matter is that 90% (if not more) of what you "know" about a candidate is second hand (or third hand or fourth hand) knowledge that has been spun, edited, twisted, and filtered through people's biases and ideologies. I would want a chance to see them live, and unedited, how they actually interact with live people (not the youtube version), hear their comments in actual context, what their body language was, etc.

Meh. Being part of an audience at an event is pointless. 10 minutes face-to-face to discuss the important things? That would be useful.

Sure, a one on one interview would be awesome but, failing that, a chance to see a person live and unedited is the next best thing.

I didn't have any sort of grasp what President Clinton was like until I met him, watched him with others, and heard him speak. Then it was a "No fucking wonder..." moment.

I don't doubt that many politicians are very charismatic in person. But this does not really matter to me if I don't agree with the underlying message. Let's not forget that Hitler was considered a great orator. People were very moved when they heard him speak. He was considered very charismatic in person. Too bad the message was so very wrong.
