Good news from California:
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the August 2010 decision of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco striking down Proposition 8, the measure that stripped same-sex couples of the right to marry in California.Despite the religious fundies, looks like same sex marriage is going to happen.  My state is closing to signing it into law, and now this out of CA.

do help me understand why in the world anyone in their right mind would want the state as a third party in their relationship?  Especially when you get the same results with a simply "private" contract?

Despite the religious fundies

You are aware that Prop 8 passed as an amendment to the California Constitution on the same ballot as Obama winning the White House, right?

Fundies are only part of the problem, and at least they are generally honest about where they stand, and why.

So is Washington State.

It's only right.

Has nothing to do with that "sacrosanct" word...."marriage".....has to do with rights.

A gay man or woman (in states that only agree to "civil unions") don't allow their partner to help direct health care when the other can't....nor do they accept the rights of the mate to direct. There's no continuation of SSI should one partner die, no linkage to pensions....

I'm not into guys (sorry....I'm a guy, I actually have a legal obligation to say that) but if two people have love for each other...who the fuck am I (or you) to say otherwise as to its veracity?

It's the right thing.

Period.

“Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples,” Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote in the majority 2-1 opinion for the three-member panel.
