Thus far, Santorum is winning all three primaries today.  As of 8 PM MST:

Missouri:
Santorum 55%
Gingrich Not on ballot
Romney 25%
Paul 12%

Colorado:
Santorum 50%
Gingrich 21%
Romney 19%
Paul 10%

Minnesota:
Santorum 43%
Paul 27%
Romney 18%
Gingrich 12%

It's liable to change, especially in Colorado, where 99% of the vote remains to be counted.  The huge surprises are how strong Santorum's results are, and how weak Romney's results are.

This is a huge win for Santorum, who's been pushing to be seen as the conservative alternative to Romney.  Not only do tonight's results conform that, he might even be in second place in delegates (if we ignore that the delegates really get assigned at later dates).  The clear losers are Romney and Gingrich, especially Gingrich.

Gingrich had been running as THE alternative to Romney, and painting Romney as moderate and a heartless capitalist.  Santorum can't be painted with the same brush, so Newt will need to attack on two fronts to stay viable.

Edit:  My previous post was premature.  Romney's catching up to Santorum in Colorado.  (But the other states' results aren't changing from the 8 PM posting.) The latest (8:25 PM MST):

Missouri:
Santorum 55%
Gingrich Not on ballot
Romney 25%
Paul 12%

Colorado:
Romney 37%
Santorum 37%
Gingrich 17%
Paul 9%

Minnesota:
Santorum 45%
Paul 27%
Romney 17%
Gingrich 11%

If Santorum wins the nomination, I'm donating to the Obama campaign.

So after tonight, what's in store for the four GOP candidates?

Santorum - Santorum now needs to look and act as Presidential as possible.  He can easily boost himself and jab Romney at the same time by simply saying he is the conservative alternative to Romney.  He's been working harder than any other candidate and needs to maintain that.  He now has achieved more primary wins than any other candidate, and needs to leverage that into fundraising.

Gingrich - despite the media stating that this is a big setback for Romney, it's worse for Gingrich.  He can't state that he's THE conservative.  He can't really boast about his experience because he's trying to make himself look like an outsider (!).  Santorum's conservative credentials and electability surpass Gingrich's, and his closets have fewer skeletons.  Gingrich will not only have to continue attacking Romney but will need to attack Santorum and find some way Santorum is weaker than he is.  He's in serious danger of becoming irrelevant.

Romney - Romney has to figure out why he's so weak.  He has more money than the other candidates and a much stronger organization.  He should be stomping his way to the top.  Instead, he's consistently pulling 20% - 40%.  Gingrich is a terrible candidate that would have knocked him out if he'd taken Florida.  Santorum is almost a joke and he stomped Romney tonight.  Romney's only been able to keep in by outspending his opponents significantly.  Romney has a difficult choice to make now - if he attacks Santorum, he'll start looking like a negative campaigner with no merits of his own.  But to ignore Santorum may mean losing the primary.

Paul - Paul's doing exactly what he wants.  He's finishing solidly and quietly harvesting electoral votes.

I can see a result with different candidates playing King of the Hill and nobody getting a clear majority.  If so, the GOP is in deep trouble.

The Colorado results are far from over.  Romney's clearly leading in the more urban, liberal counties like Denver and Boulder, while Santorum's strength is in the more rural, isolated places.  A lot of sizable votes are still out in both places, as well as El Paso County, which comprises the classically conservative Colorado Springs.

Funny how the santorum camp is all smiles today, despite still being a distant 4th in delegates,

Because he's like Reagan light personality-wise, WAS A LEGACY at Harvard AND IT SHOWS, And he has the temperament of an old lady with a bladder control issue THE MINUTE anyone questions him or what he is CLAIMING AT THAT GIVEN MOMENT.

Looks a little tough to correct in time for the general if you ask me.

After today's voting? ...

Paul, still a nutcase, but still tagging some delegates.

Gingrich, still has 'ick'-factor seediness and baggage.

Romney, still has cult-mormon and vulture-capitalism problems.

Santorum, still has stereotypical rightwing weasel going for him.

And Santorum scored big, a hat-trick today ... But the GOP's psychothinktanks figure his catholicism will disenthuse the fundi-protestant bloc.

And, turnouts were flat or low, compared to 2008.

...

They're all cults to me. I was too cryptic. My point is, to the Lutherans in the Missouri Synod (WTF is a synod?) and up there in Minnesota, and the rural Church of Godders and whatnot, the LDS is a bunch of heretical heathens. They have a point.

Freakin' Rochester. The Jehoovies were big in Rochacha, too.

Nah, Hippie, as I pointed out earlier, in Minnesota, two extrememly idiotic (maybe three) events are in play here.

Romney used Pawlenty to stump for him, a fiscal disaster of a governor for MN.  That cooked his ass outright, now and forever.

The strawpoll (non-binding) and caucus were held in the lair of Michelle Bachmann (possibly as a homecoming queens present, but she didn't make the dance) and it is the stronghold of the loons of the right (remember that is our state bird, the loon). Notice the turnout wasn't excessive here.

And third the republican party machinery is pretty much in shambles here in minnesota with the recent and ongoing fucking and sucking with Big Tits Koch, and a wholesale rats deserting a sinking ship from the State GOP Committee, the auctioning off by that same committee for face time with senators and house GOP for lobbyists, and all sorts of other disgusting and dipshitted shit.....

So, its a Look!!!! Norman!!!! the loons!!!! situation up here in MN.

And thats the news from Lake Wobegone.

Okay, Ron, you gave reasons why Santorum did well vs Romney.  But not why he did well vs Gingrich.  It sounds to me like the MN GOP vote was up for grabs, and Gingrich's lack of organization (a nice way of saying he's lazy and can't get people to work with him) were no match for Santorum's work.

Similar story here in Colorado.  Two years ago, the GOP race was so botched up that Tancredo as an independent siphoned off all the normal Republican voters to the extent that the GOP candidate Dan Maes barely got 10% of the vote in the general election.  Highly fractured party, and Santorum worked it.  Gingrich hardly paid Colorado any attention.

If I am blown, I shall accept the mantle of my party's nomination.

Gingrich has pretty much fuckin hosed everyone up here, we have seen his former work in government and are not looking to attend the sequel.

We are heavily fiscally conservative in our government here, heavily lutheran and or religious, as an example...

The town I grew up in, Fergus Falls, MN 56573 (so you can look it up) and do not live too far away from was for all my life and probably my fathers life a town of 12,000 (big town around here) and 27 churches.

Modesty forbids me from describing the myriad of ways in which Gingrich is a miasmatically repugnant motherfucker to most Minnesotans.
