Status: offline 		I just got my brand new Kindle Fire.  Registered it, figured out how to download books, no problem

I can't figure out how to get a readable copy of the damn User's Guide on to the thing!

I also would like to change the screen background when it is locked (hence the need for the manual).

So anyone have one and can offer help?


ETA:  Got the User's guide (finally).  Still want to know how to change that setting...

Status: offline 		Thanks.  So I can't change it.  Well, that sucks, but certainly not that big a deal.  Would just love to see something colorful other than the techie crap they show.  Dull and boring.

Status: offline 		I looked into buying the kindle fire.  It has limitations.  In the end it was not worth it to me.  I can buy a small computer for 200, and it does more than kindle fire for the same price...and it's almost as small

However, in a few weeks I'd like to know how you like it.

Status: offline 		I really was only looking for an e-reader because I will be traveling extensively at the end of the year, and packing books is just not feasible.  So far as an e-reader I am very happy.  The touch screen responds very well (most don't for me for some reason), there are plenty of books that are free (with prime membership), plus a lending library for one book a month.

Another nice thing is not needing to have a light on to read in bed, lol.  I still need to get a case for it, and those things for the screens, but so far I like it.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it.  For me, it seems to suit my needs just fine.  I'm still playing with the stuff that is extra (to me, since I just wanted to read books on it).  For that stuff, I am finding navigation a little more challenging, but for the price, it does exactly what I want.

Oh yea, and if I bought a little netbook, I would have to open it to read.  For that, this is much better.

Status: offline 		And I'm still happy with my Kindle.  I have no desire to be needing to buy an app for this or an app for that.  I got what I wanted.  I took it out of the box and could immediately start downloading books.  No searching for the best place to get an additional application, hope it all worked right and did what I wanted.

And the really funny thing?  When I was researching E-READERS (not tablets), all of these "cheap" alternatives weren't mentioned.  My friend has a "Cruise" and I like mine better.

But thanks for your input.

Ummm, Kindle has a free download for both Windows computers/notebooks and android-based phones/tablets. I have it on both, they work great for free library e-books. Btw, if you can stand the size of a smart-phone for a reader...sometimes they can be had at Best Buy for less than $50. You buy a pay-as-you-go phone by Virgin Mobile, Cricket, etc...whatever's on sale. I got an LG Optimus for $65. If you just want the wifi/apps/reader there's no need to even activate/pay for voice service. You can download Skype, pay $2.99 a month for unlimited and anywhere there's wifi you can call any phone in the US or Canada and talk all you like. Plus you'll have a camera, a calculator, a vid camera, an alarm, calendar, browser, flashlight, a zillion free apps (just saved myself $$ on a metronome and tuner by installing free versions of those.)

Congrats on your Fire, Lafayette Lady. I've seen them in action and they have beautiful, perfectly-sized displays. I need more functionality/storage so have stuck with a notebook but on the go every ounce counts, and those Fires are light and bright. Enjoy it!

Yes Kindle does Im thinking of a different app that does all my conversions to .mobi (its been a long day)

Status: offline 		Have the fire. Got an app (had to buy) to convert blueray to view on the fire. The fire does what I need, but I wish it has a usb port for docking flash drives.
