BoxwineForBrunch -> let us list surprising scientologists (2/10/2012 3:13:05 PM)

years ago i was listening to the commentary track for a futurama episode (shut up) and one of the creators was talking about how during his time with the simpsons he had wanted to do a scientology spoof but the church had "spooky amounts of influence everywhere" and the idea not only got quashed but it was made clear to him a lot of people wouldn't be interested in working with him ever again if he didn't behave. everybody else on the track seemed to get uncomfortable. it wasn't until a couple of years later i found out that one of the stars the church had "spooky influence" over was bart simpson himself (nancy cartwright).

i was even more surprised a long time ago when i learned beck (i'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me) is not just a scientologist but the offspring of some serious honchos in the church. he used to go to lengths to keep this obscure but has become more open about it recently.

it was a bummer to find out about laura prepon because she was hot, and now i can't in good conscience hook up with her, which totally would have happened someday otherwise.

when i found out about greta von susteren i thought "oh. yeah well that makes sense."

who are some scientologists who surprised you?

DarkSteven -> RE: let us list surprising scientologists (2/10/2012 3:47:04 PM)

Beck?  Glenn Beck is LDS.  Which Beck is a Scientologist?

BoxwineForBrunch -> RE: let us list surprising scientologists (2/10/2012 3:49:15 PM)

god every time I hear the word Scientology ... all I can think of is that vid of Tom Cruise rambling on and on (with the mission impossible music playing in the background ) and he's just weirding the hell out !!!

SternSkipper -> RE: let us list surprising scientologists (2/10/2012 4:00:54 PM)

I was a 'little surprised' Travolta was

SternSkipper -> RE: let us list surprising scientologists (2/10/2012 4:05:19 PM)

Oh, and I thought it was pretty surprised about Will Smith too.
And I also remember laughing my ass off that Kirstie Alley was one... Like it did her any good

Let's test your Scientologist recognition skills.
See if you can tell us what famous Scientology figure this is:

Trismagistus -> RE: let us list surprising scientologists (2/10/2012 5:08:32 PM)

Not just a $cientologist, sadly: he's also a big contributor to the war chest and was making excuses for the false front rehab programmes at one point as well. He was also really going out of his way to keep that quiet, iirc.

Isaac Hayes. (Who at least left the cult because he was billed in the recruiting video he did as "Isaac Hayes: Entertainer", not "Isaac Hayes: Bad Motherfucker"...)

All of the Incredible String Band went through the phase at one point. It's been suggested that there's as connection between this and the last two or three godawful records that killed them off. (That said, Mike heron was already sending them money when he made the wonderful Smiling Men With Bad Reputations...)

Lockit -> RE: let us list surprising scientologists (2/13/2012 3:20:21 PM)

Dennis Weaver... was basically a minister in Scientology.

My ex got us involved when I was eighteen. I told them what I thought and was kicked out of the worldwide church of Scientology. Just broke my heart. [:(]
