Wasn't Manson more one of the dianetics splinter groups (either the Process or the Four P Movement, I think) than $cientology?

He spent a lot of time in Haight Ashbury trying to ingratiate himself with the Airplane, The Dead, and the Hell's Angels that hung around the Dead and the Pranksters early on. At that time he was spouting Operating Thetan ad nauseum... but it was along with all manner of crazy borderline shit.
So 'splinter'? Yeah, I suppose if you PRESUME he was using their programming techniques as part of his regime. Along with a ton of ACID.
I heard Jerry and someone else in the band said something on the order of "keep that clown away from us" and that was ballgame for Charlie in the Haight. He would cruise it for refugees along with LA.
