9 Free " Notes" Programs for Organizing Infor... - 2/13/2012 12:07:26 PM

Status: offline 		I write a lot of notes and then have to go back and find them. 
Sometimes is is more like an archeological dig, to "find" them.

Here is a short evaluation list I ran across of:  9 Free Notes Software Programs
So I thought I would share it.  One may be helpful to you.

Status: offline 		I played around with some of that stuff years ago, and wound up with a bunch of stuff in a proprietary format that I couldn't access after the vendor went out of business and it wouldn't run under newer versions of the OS. Back then I was prety much stuck.

My eventual solution was a directory full of appropriately-named text files. It probably involves more work, but it's never going to get lost again.

Status: offline 		The Guide (for Windows, though the newest version is multiplatform) is a brilliant tool for this purpose.

Also, it can export things to HTML at least, and I seem to recall there were thoughts about switching the backend to XML.

Status: offline 		I'll put in another plug for the (rather unfortunately named) freebie program Arsclip here, though it's not quite what this thread's about.

Arsclip works in combo with Notepad. When you select text and press CTRL+C, it'll copy that text (or image). However, this section of text/image won't be automatically wiped when you select and copy the next bit of text, as it is with the standard Windows function. Instead, you can click your Arsclip icon and see the list of things that you've copied that day. You can set Arsclip to retain its store between reboots if you like.

I find it dead useful, anyway. As habit, now, I'll copy all the text on a post here, or on an email. I've hardly lost anything since I installed Arsclip.

Status: offline 		I use "Sticky Notes" that comes with windows seven, then once a week I transfer them all to a prog called texnotes, which does so many things I havent figured them all out yet.
I love a good PIM but rarely get the time to fill it out properly so its basically a waste of time and space I need something smart and fast, Evernote was good but I didnt like the intrusions, so sticky note works for what I need it to do, all other stuff goes into texnotes
gonna check out the freeones later tho:) I like playing with new software, but it can be a huge time hole and I dont have much of that for now.

Status: offline 		I put notes on my iphone these days instead of my computer. I usually need to remember things while I'm out running around so this helps me and I can set a time to remind me if I forgot to look at my notes.

This is why I use The Guide.

It's so simple you learn to use every feature in zero time, yet it's still a good enough tool for the job, so it becomes a sort of ideal compromise for "the rest of us" who don't have the time to survey all the tools and then master some swiss army knife piece of software and attendant workflow and routines.

It has a standard "intrinsic" layout, with a tree structure on the left hand side, and a freetext area on the right hand side. Everything can be done with the keyboard, and the keys are intuitive. It doesn't have an alarm function, but those only get in the way (if you need alarm features, it's a better idea to pick up a methodology instead, such as the one called "Getting Things Done").

First I want to thank everyone for their contributions to this thread.
I will investigate the information you have shared.

I was just browsing through FireFox Add-ons when I ran across
this collection of Note add-ons for Firefox:

Also, I have started using Notepad ++

It is an empowered version of Notepad with a lot of extra features
and does what I need.  It supports:  tabs, It is light and clean, it supports macros,
exports to HTTP among others, you can launch the content inside a browser window,
and a lot more I have not discovered yet.  But so far it has been great.

THanks for the info, I'M gonna look into it, I dont like alarms, i find I watch the clock tooooo much and the sound is irritating:) Especially as I work on my computer maybe 16 hours a day, I find I divide my time according to priority and need, and then other projects.. spend a few hours work, then a break to pick up emails, respond here, social activity, eat, drink, move around then back to another project. It works for me ..until I get caught up in a series of postings or other time holes. I dont have a smart phone, but I would use its notebook if I were to spend time away from my computer or laptop.

I don't write notes.

Writing notes mandates that I know where they are.

That requires notes.
