...I sorta think it beats a dead horse. Profusly tuning a radio, eating, reading a map, in general not paying attention is a hazard. Note the article claim earpeice cell calls are included. I never bother with an earpiece. To figit it in and that- Ild be done with the call by then. One day- I seen a mini van come from the mall...full of people. Driver on the cell. What on earth was so important that the passengers or his driving was 2nd effort? In public- I am very guarded what I say on a cell. No one needs to know. My sister will travel across country to visit me on vacation...and be chained to work and home via cell. Almost like she never left. I wondered where the escape was. Cell etiquet is being written. If I meet with a person, they have my attention. One time- my mechanic was to phone. I explain, I need to have my phone on - as my mechanic is to call. As for call wating. Put me on hold, and I hang up after 2 minutes.

The ban should go further to include any person who becomes the rudest person in the world because they do not know how to use their cell phone. Those who must be tethered to their phones while shopping. Only holding others up because they cannot focus on the task at hand. I don't care to hear your entire conversation. There are places for phones, there are places they should not be used at all. While they are propsing a ban they should include all of the wrong places while at it.

Wow. Someone had way too much time on their hands to think up that stuff. I am all for makign things safer, but that goes a bit overboard; they can always just add that to the driver's test, see if you can drive and be on the cell at the same time.

Sounds like a election type proposal to me. Lawrence is a college town and there are two diverse cultures at play, (we are talking the redest of the red states) that this looks like nothing more than politicains playing to their base. Those young crazy liberal drivers! Now I am all for banning cellphones in cars especially if hand held, but to be fair, also need to ban all things that distract and cause safety issues. I was just behind a person a couple of days ago who almost got into two accidents and held up traffic by going well under the speed limit and not committing to a lane all becasue he could not stop looking at the person in the passenger seat. I just think laws should be fair and not pet peeves of the majority. For the record I do not ever use my cellphone while driving!

I know the laws vary on this, but where I am they have the rule no hands rule. You can talk on the cell while driving only if you use the headset. Either way, I think its a huge distraction. And most people dont regard the law on it. I have seen people chatting away on the phone while trying to negotiate their way through a 4-way intersection during rush hour. I think its insane and horribly dangerous. There is something about talking on the phone that causes a different perspective of visual perceptions. And you can lose sight of how fast you are going or miss a stop sign etc. I agree that reading a map, or putting on make up can be just as distracting. Im thinking, short of an emergency, what could be so important that it cant wait until you reach your destination.

You should watch the Mythbusters epsoide where they deal with this myth. There conclusions were that driving while talking on the cell phone hindered your driving performace the same as being drunk. That is the major reason why driving while talking on the phone at all (including using a headset) should be illigal.

In my area, its up to the discretion of an officer to give a ticket to someone who is driving while on their cell phone. I have seen people get tickets for using them; I use my hands-free or my speaker phone as much as I can when I am driving, mostly because their are bad drivers in this area who tail-gate or the like. Then again, I am a bit of an aggressive driver at times. I am all for officers getting stricter on those who driver reclassly while on their cell, they should get jail time, that would curb things; then again, it would make our jails fuller; so a very heafty fine would work, something around $1000 for the first offense.

I am an offender. I talk on Mine a lot for business reasons. I also know it is very dangerous and I have seen some really scary things from drivers talking on cell phones. My province bans talking on them while driving. A full ban is a really good idea.

All I can say is what I've seen with my own eyes. People who are driving with one hand on the wheel and one hand on a cell phone are terrible drivers. I'd support a hands-free rule.

In England we've had a no-hand-free rule for a while now. Having just one hand any only half your attention on the wheel when trying to go around roundabouts etc... stupid thing to do. In favour.

My guess is the cell industry will fight such a law. Im thinking there are plenty of laws on the books right now. My buddy here was in an accident recently in PA- not his fault. Even still- the cop asked him if he owned a cell phone. Driving while sleep deprived- is dangerous. This would be less an issue if there werent the overly glued gabbies to their phones. Years ago- when the seat belt law was made- it was then a secondary offense. Now in many places it is not. My mom is plump. A seatbelt wont fit her. I can relate to tensions of college brats. I live in a college town, tho a small one.

Queensland has had in law for several years now that it is an offence for using your mobile phopne unless it is hands free whilst driving with fines of several hundred dollars and loss of demerit points (loose enough and you automatocally loose your licence for a period of time) I believe the fines may be close to AU$1000 now or close to it....

I can't even begin to count the number of times some idiot has nearly run into me with their vehicle because they're too damn busy yapping into their cell phone. Geez, driving isn't just something you do. You are operating a fast moving hunk of metal/machinery that weighs over a ton. Are you really suicidal or homicidal? Use your brain! I admit it I am guilty of gabbing away on my handsfree sometimes. But most of it is when I am traveling, running back and forth on long trips. Attempting to manuever through traffic while chatting on your phone or texting, fiddling with the radio or other stuff just aint real bright. love and light lee

I commented to Hubby the other day that when i take my walks in a development nearby i noticed that almost half of the cars leaving the development have drivers on their cell phones and i wondered why they couldn't just call before leaving home. Now i'm thinking they are all having affairs and calling secretly.[:o]
