A less extreme stance will actually get your point across to more people.
Extremists on the Right and the Left tend to alienate those in the middle (your audience)
Does that make sense?

Folks on the Far Left will almost always support you. Those on the Far Right will almost always oppose you. Those folks aren't your audience. The people you need to be speaking to are the 60% in the middle. Those are the folks with opinions you are trying to change.
