So I'm reading, watching and listening to all this talk about big government, planned parenthood, birth control and people taking advantage of "us taxpayers" and all of the talk seems to be directed toward poor people, females and the middle class in general. Yet I can't turn on the television without seeing ad add telling me that they can get me free medical supplies and even a scooter chair without cost by filling the medicare claims for me. I haven't heard one single complaint about how these businesses ("job creators) are bilking us out of what must be millions.

Am I missing something here?

If you go to your local Social Security (and Medicare) office, you will find a pamphlet asking you to turn in anyone who got a scooter if they didn't previously use a wheelchair. So the Government is aware of the scam, but if a doctor says someone needs the scooter...
Getting the medical companies out of Doctor's pockets so they will care for the patient instead of their "friends," in big pharma would be wonderful, but I don't know how you would manage it.

Doctors are also sources of fraud, and Medicare/insurance companies/Social Security all have major fraud investigation divisions.

You wouldn't believe what doctors prescribe as medically necessary, right up to central air conditioning systems. Or, they charge for visits to patients that they don't make, such as in nursing homes.

Beginning recently, hospitals can no longer charge any payer (Medicare, insurance, etc.) for "never events", that is, events that were caused by neglect (bedsores, instruments left in a body cavity after surgery) that should never have happened. Hospitals would charge for all the care necessary to clean up their mistakes/neglect.

Yep, same thing the rest of us are missing Justice intervening on our behalf when it comes to crooks setting themselves up in a white collar crime wave.

There's no bigger crook than the one at a Health Insurance company death-panel denying coverage for a sick child so that they have a few dollars to spend on what they think are more important things.

Yeah, well I don't think we're talking about the kid with CP here... As for private insurers, I like the tune 'single payer'.

I think this is just another example where the hype gets in the way of solution. I am in no way a fan of fraud or greed. I do think we should correct missuses in federal spending but I think that we can actually do well by the people. I'd rather our discussion at the national level be about how we offer affordable healthcare to all people rather than IF we do.

I spent my last 18 months in Florida in a beautiful, 4,000 sq ft house with a pool and tiki hut that was available because the boyfriend was in jail for Medicare fraud. Crime pays...until you get caught.

Since the abusers, on the corpaorate side I mean, go after it so hard. I gotta think that there has to be a substantial return in cleaning the system up as you suggest perhaps even enough to take the sting out for most tax payers. Some will never be happy.

What was his place in the whole big picture? Doctor? Equipment Vendor? Just curious.

He was convicted for using his pharmacy to fraudulently bill Medicaid for prescription medications primarily for treating organ transplant patients. I believe he also had medical supplies.

When M and I were in Florida in November we drove by the house to show him where I used to live and there was a brand new Cadillac Escalade in the driveway - he'd been out of jail 5 months.

While googling just now I found out he was a notorious drug smuggler in the 70s and did time for that too.
