Actually it looks more like "We make money from selling school lunches, so we are rejecting lunches from home." Typical of what happens when you try to inject a profit motive into something like a school...

Sounds like someone (the worker) needs to retake some nutrition classes.

TheHeretic -> RE: WE know how to feed your child better than YOU (2/16/2012 9:34:47 PM)

I'm curious to know what makes it so hard to say who was in the cafeteria, picking through the lunches. We don't need a name and email addy here. A job title and employer seem pretty easy to come up with.

Editor's note, Feb. 15: The first two paragraphs of this story were updated. Neither DHHS nor school officials would identify the person who inspected the homemade lunches and decided they did not meet USDA guidelines. CJ has made multiple requests to DHHS for clarification. In an email to CJ, department spokeswoman Lori Walston said: "As mentioned in the statement from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued last night, this agency is currently working to determine the specifics of this case.

oh I see.. they are now trying to say the kid "misunderstood".. a very common tactic to divert blame..

.. it was them that misunderstood.. the kids meal was entirely compliant. no need for milk as the sandwich had cheese and she had an apple juice to drink so no need for more liquid..

What's Huff n Poo's speculation piece got to do with the question I raised, Fargle?

Surely the school and cafeteria staff don't just let strangers off the street wander into the cafeteria, and dig through the student's food?

well the government community has grown to the point that for its continued survival there will be one agent with the head up each persons ass taking a food census.

people who have not figgered it out yet will soon learn its all about the money hunny!

You're really freaking out over a kid getting a free 122 calorie, 8 ounce carton of milk?

I am not the parent, she is the one that is "feaking out" about it.. and according to the parent her kid got 3 chicken nuggets instead of her healthier and fully compliant homemade lunch..

I'd like to see that in some sort of sworn statement form....

FR

I wonder if the worker called the kids parents or checked with the office to see if the kid was allergic to anything before she gave her the nuggets.

These facts are critical because the “state agent” in this story turns out to be nothing more than a researcher from a program that grades the performance of pre-schools and operates out of the FPG Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It also does not appear that this institute has any actual authority other than to provide assessments, which the state then uses in making licensing decisions and in setting the fees it will pay the day care provider for subsidized care.

Your question answered.

Seems the original story was a bunch of bull.

Wow......the heavy hand of big government AGAIN!.......errr.....I meant heavy hand of the local school board........again.....[8|]

Shouldn`t someone have an original thought themselves before dismissing the huff-po out of hand?

DarkSteven -> RE: WE know how to feed your child better than YOU (2/17/2012 6:08:53 AM)

Insane.

1. Nobody knows what happened.  On the one hand, we have a mother's account of what her four year old child told her.  On the other hand, we have the school that seems completely unaware of what's going on in the cafeteria. The investigative reporter who did the digging isn't sure either, but surmises that a cafeteria worker told the child to get milk.  The only way that makes sense if if ALL children are told to get milk, which doesn't appear to be the case.

2. I'm not sure what the goal of the nutrition program (assuming that's what did this) is.  If they're trying to educate about nutrition, tell the parents, not the kids.

3. From the HuffPo article: "On the other hand, Thompson pointed out in his original post on this story that the pre-school program at issue here was primarily for at-risk students, students whose parents are arguably less likely than most (due to lack of economic resources or nutrition education) to pack a healthful meal for their children."

Um.  WHAT pre-school program at issue?!??!  Part of the confusion is that nobody knows what adult told the kid what, and what was the motivation.  AFAIK, there IS no coherent preschool program applicable here.  There appears to be a definite preschool nutrition program, but it doesn't appear to have been imposed on the kid.

My best guess:

1. Kid is told by cafeteria worker "You can get a milk to drink by going though the line."
2. Kid misinterprets that as an order to go through the line to get a free lunch.
3. Kid comes home with original lunch intact and mother goes nuts.
4. Instead of calling the school and working things out like any sane person, she contacted her state rep.  After that, any chance of a rational resolution is gone and it's off to posturing.

If you can twist seemingly unrelated events or non-events to create a braitbart style government=big-brother scenario that feeds into the conservative alt.reality of "victim of gubment"......does any of that matter?
