I think the boy scout thing is a big part of Superman's appeal to be honest. The highly moral thing and that he's absolutely his father's son (Jonathan, Not Jor El) might look bit dated now, but is pretty much the core of the character, and it still works. A lot of my favourite comics characters aren't superheroes at all: Judge Dredd might qualify (I've heard opinions both way about him), but John Constantine, Nemesis the Warlock and the cast of Tomb Of Dracula, Sin City or Night Force don't. As for the long underwear types though, I always used to like Daredevil. Very complex and rich character for somebody who started off as basically a working class knock off of Batman...
