Normal saline is the recommended formula for any sort of frequent use, it's the least irritating to the bowel. The formula for normal saline is 9.0g to 1L water. I'm a fan of warm oil (mineral oil is often used to treat constipation), but watch the seepage. I'm more inclined to use Vitimin E oil, to increase elasticity and promote healing. I'm leery about using much of anything else more than occasionally, there are lot's of fad formulations popular in the colon cleansing community, coffee, wheatgrass, etc., but I'd thoroughly research anything before you try it, it ain't all healthy. Alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the colon and should be avoided in all forms, as little as an ounce can cause alcohol poisoning, and it dries tissues out, so I avoid lotions containing alcohol. Cetyl alcohol is might be OK in small quantities, it's common ingredient in over the counter lotions, but I prefer to avoid it. I believe one should also avoid organic substances that might promote bacterial growth, although this is an area of ongoing research for me. There are beneficial types of bacteria living in the colon, and you don't want to kill those, another reason to avoid alcohol and/or other antibacterials. Trace quantities of E. coli shouldn't hurt you if you are otherwise healthy, and the healthy bacteria might be promoted by yogurt or something - it's apparently good for treating yeast infections, although you'd have to make your own, since most off-the-shelf varieties have added sugars that will feed the yeast cultures.
