RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A bill that would define life as starting at conception is dead for this year in Virginia. The Senate voted 24-14 Thursday to send the so-called "personhood" bill back to committee and carry it over to 2013. Senate Republican Leader Tommy Norment of James City County made the motion to shelve the bill, saying more study is needed. The vote came hours after the Senate Education and Health Committee endorsed the measure on an 8-7 party-line vote, with Democrats voting against it. At least three times, the committee chairman, Sen. Steve Martin, threatened to have police remove opponents of the bill after they spoke out during debate. The committee earlier approved a bill requiring pre-abortion external ultrasound exams. It was amended to eliminate ultrasounds requiring an invasive ultrasound probe.

Yes Im Happy! With serious reservations, It makes me wonder tho, why it has to go back to committee when it was so clearly a bad bill. They should fire the lawyers.
The fact that it will only brought up after the election is not surprising, damage control is not working tho.

Thanks be for that! This vicious bill is dead for this year at least.

If any help is need to dig its grave and help bury it permanently, I volunteer now!

And it would be nice if someone poured about 2,000,000 tons of concrete on top of the grave to make sure that nothing like this ever rears its ugly head again.

Not only but also, the governor is now stating, he didnt realise that trans vaginal meant an invasive procedure....

Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) said on Friday that he changed the terms of his support for a controversial GOP-sponsored mandatory ultrasound bill at the last minute this week because he didn't realize until that point that the law would require an invasive, transvaginal procedure. Instead, he and a few Republican delegates rewrote the bill to mandate regular abdominal ultrasounds before an abortion, even though they are ineffective during the earliest weeks of pregnancy.

During the amendment process, McDonnell told a Politico panel, "We realized there was [sic] different kinds of ultrasounds, so what I recommended to the General Assembly, and they adopted the other day is, let's make the requirement for an abdominal ultrasound. We found out through the medical community that in most cases if it's not sufficient, on their own they already do other kinds of ultrasounds. So I said let's make those amendments. I also got legal advice from various people that these kinds of mandatory, invasive requirements might run afoul of Fourth Amendment law."

Before Wednesday's House vote on the bill, it was ridiculed by Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" and lambasted by Virginia Democrats for being "akin to rape."

McDonnell said he hadn't originally paid attention to the ultrasound bill because, as governor, "You're so busy advocating your agenda, you don't read every legislator's bill." But once he "realized exactly the medical and legal issues involved," he told lawmakers to make changes.

Whether McDonnell knew that there were different kinds of ultrasounds involved or not, state Sen. Barbaro Favola (D) told HuffPost that the GOP Senators knew exactly what the mandatory ultrasound bill did before they passed it, because Sen. Ralph Northam (D), a physician, explained the details of the invasive procedure on the Senate floor.

"He went through in elaborate detail the fact that this was a transvaginal procedure and made very clear to the Senate exactly what this bill required women to go through," she told HuffPost.

Why didnt anyone mention it might go against the fourth amendment? while I dont expect everyone to know the difference between trans abdominal and trans vaginal, I do expect people to come up with laws that dont violate anything, least of all women, BUT it does STINK of backpedalling. Lets hope the viriginia women agree( altho ..heh who knows)

You may be pleasantly surprised. Virginia is slowly moving from being a Southern state to being a Mid-Atlantic state. Partially this is because of DC. Partially it is just folks moving south for weather taking their politics with them.
And partially it is because the Right is losing the military. Norfolk is a huge navy base, and the Navy especially is moving to the left. Why? Well, the military has been taking in the lower classes for a long time now. When it was all male, the white portion that was extremely conservative overawed the minority portion. But by 2008 the minorities + women reached a tipping point. It was acceptable to be a Democrat and in the military.
Now granted, if you are white, male, and an officer, it is assumed you are a republican. But women, minorities, and enlisted this is no longer assumed.
I've always wondered if some of the absentee ballot problems in 2008 and 2010 were republicans trying to hide evidence that the military was no longer their bank of extra votes?

Sometimes, Lucy, I really have to marvel at the special 'expertise' that male right wing politicians bring to womens issues. I'm sure I'm not the only one who reacts like this.

Exactly my thoughts Tweak...
one of the repubs wives is apparently peeved enough to deny him sex. Then the dipshit decided to tell his "buds" in the legislature about it, and it was "filmed" the vid is here.. I wonder how long he is gonna go without when she sees him laughing about it.
video here....http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/24/david-albo-virginia-lawmaker-no-sex-transvaginal-ultrasound_n_1300404.html

Virginia's controversial transvaginal ultrasound bill hit one Republican lawmaker close to home. In the bedroom, to be precise. He said a fellow lawmaker's television discussion of the bill cost him sex with his wife. State Del. David Albo (R-Fairfax Station) was addressing the House of Delegates Friday when he described his failed seduction of his wife Tuesday night. Albo had driven home from Richmond following debate on the bill, which would have required women to have a transvaginal ultrasound procedure before receiving an abortion. (Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) announced this week that he and Republican lawmakers reached a deal to make the transvaginal procedure optional instead of mandated.) Albo's remarks -- which he delivered with laughter -- were aimed in particular at that TV-talking colleague, Del. David Englin (D-Alexandria), a leading opponent of the bill. "Boy's in bed, wife's here, TV, poured some red wine," Albo said of how he began the night. Albo then attempted to play some "mood music" for his fellow lawmakers to help explain how he tried to entice his wife. House members were laughing as Albo received assistance from another lawmaker in putting on the music. The next step in his seduction plan: He went to turn on the Redskins Channel to help put his wife in the mood for love. Apparently, his wife loves the Washington football team. On the way to his Redskins seduction, Albo found a news channel that mentioned his name in the context of the ultrasound bill. On Rachel Maddow's show on MSNBC, Englin was discussing the ultrasound bill. Unfortunately for Albo, he and his wife stopped to watch the show -- and his warm bed turned into a cold shower. "The show's over, and she looks at me and says, 'I have to go to bed,'" Albo recounted to further laughter. He then directly addressed a chuckling Englin. "If the gentleman's plan was to make sure there was one less Republican in the world, he did," Albo said. "I expect an apology from him later in person on the House floor."

There's some delicious poetic justice in that tale!

I kinda like the idea of sex strikes. A sex strike was instrumental in bringing the vicious civil war in Liberia to an end recently. It also earned its organiser, a Muslim woman, (whose name, to my shame, escapes me) a share of the Nobel Peace Prize. So they can be pretty effective.

Unfortunately, as we are dealing with Republican right wingers, there's probably a few rent boys tucked away somewhere in the background (closet?)..... so I'm unable to absolutely guarantee its effectiveness here.
