I like ball gags and penis gags; the only times a sub has pushed a gag out was when I told her to try to, so I could adjust it. I take that back; a couple of times a sub did think it'd be fun to push a gag out, but the first time they did that was also the last time.
Now, when I really want to silence a submissive, a ball gag with an ace bandage wrapped tightly over it and around her head seems to work well. I once had a submissive get upset and start yelling; I tried the old movie trick of putting my hand over her mouth. Didn't work at all.
in the end, I think what a gag - any kind of gag - really does is make her non-verbal because she recognizes it as my Command that she not talk, and because it constantly reminds her that I want her quiet. So while a bit gag for example, doesn't, as noted in the above post, do a thing to actually, mechanically silence a submissive, she submits to the intention and thus is silent.
That being the case, why bother to try to actually silence a submissive? For one thing, in M/s relationships, at a certain point in the training process I've sometimes found it useful to gag my slave thoroughly, then tell her she no longer has a safeword because she can't say the word. Then I take her to or beyond her limits for a long time. It's not something I do lightly or for fun; but for a particular submissive, at a certain point in her development, at just the right time, doing it can move her a quantum leap to a much deeper level of submission. Sometimes submissives cling to safewords and limits, and that's preventing them from achieving the slave mindset they want and need; this process, among others, can allow a submissive to let them go and move forward.
