That's about how far I commuted to high school... and I estimate at least half the population where I live commute further than that going to work. Where Ars is from, a substantial number commute more than twice that distance.

Of course, we have MPG regulations, so the net cost may be similar.

I settled the issue of the rise in gas prices intelligently---I went out and got rid of the gas-guzzling 2000 Saturn and bought a 2012 Toyota Yaris. I've doubled my MPGs with a smaller, but oddly roomier two door hatch back that will also end up costing me less to run over the next three years than the Saturn had cost the previous 3 years.

The way we do it now.
You live in california.
All you do is go to the dmv and buy the tax sticker and put it on you car. Depending on what kind of alternative fuel you are using you may or may not be albe to access the hov lane with only one person in the vehicle.
