erieangel -> PA Gov. Corbett to eliminate the general assistance program (2/29/2012 6:57:39 PM)

This program covers the very needy in PA. These are people who are temporarily disabled, or disabled and awaiting a determination from social security (btw, when a person from general assistance to social security, every penny they had received from assistance is repaid), people caring for an elderly parent. With the end of the general assistance program, 2/3 of all people receiving medicaid in PA will lose their health coverage. And this does not include people who have lost health coverage due to clerical errors, which has been going on in Harrisburg for months. I've already had 2 clients lose their coverage and my brother has gotten letters that his sons' medicaid will be discontinued, but my brother fought to keep it active for his autistic sons.

I knew when the "club for growther" Corbett was elected to the PA governorship it would be bad for Pennsylvanians. I didn't think it would be this bad.

You are extremely ignorant on this topic, which doesnt surprise me any. Amazing how everyone thought "poor home owners" when their taxes went up, even after not going up for 12 years, and the tax assessments were put on hold.

But, fuck the people who already had 600+ million dollars in cut.

Sen. Vincent Hughes, D-Philadelphia, questioned Department of Public Welfare Secretary Gary Alexander how he justifies a proposed $275 million tax cut for businesses while slashing benefits for the poor and disabled at a time people are still recovering from the recession.

But do keep up your flamebaiting.  Its rather cute.

What a sad reaction.

Tens of thousands of PA's neediest people - the mentally handicapped, autistic children, the sick and incapacitated and the like - are going to be deprived of some much needed support and all you can think of is money. Is this what you call 'personal responsibility'?

Because it looks very like social, moral and almost certainly medical irresponsibility to me - cynical calculating and utterly bereft of compassion and humanity. Who would want to live in a society governed by such contemptible values.

This is an initiative of a "sick fuck" of a Governor - where does that leave those who applaud this initiative?

You should check out the cuts Jerry Brown has made, and proposes making in CA, Lucy. Of course, he has a "D" by his name...

89,000 children have already been removed from the program.

I would have to research it, but I don't think PA has a recall option, so we're stuck with this sicko another few years.

I'm guessing here .... so please correct me if I am wrong......

I suspect the "sick fuck" who just abolished assistance to those 89,000 children is from that part of the political spectrum than wants to force unwanted and unaffordable babies to be carried to term .......

If my guess is correct then what we are witnessing is government intervention to increase the size of the problem in the name of moral responsibility while the same government abolishes programs aimed at alleviating/solving the problem in the name of fiscal responsibility................ The word 'hypocrisy' doesn't begin to do justice to that does it?

I really hope my guess is incorrect.

erieangel -> RE: PA Gov. Corbett to eliminate the general assistance program (2/29/2012 10:19:00 PM)

Corbett is, of course, pro-life.

He has vowed not to increase taxes on big business, is in the pocket of the "frackers", and doesn't give a damn about the poor in our "Commonwealth".

Like I said in my OP, I've already got 2 clients who have lost their GA and they are both in the appeal process for SSI due to their mental illnesses. Part of the mandate of the program which I work for is to prevent homelessness among mentally ill young men, but if this goes through, we won't be able admit anybody who doesn't have social security. Already, another program, part of a national program called Fairweather Lodge has gone that route.

It is NOT the government's job to take care of people, which is something a progressive never understands. There are charities, and family assistance groups that are privately funded do help out those unfortunate people. The government simply cannot raise enough funds to deal with every social ill that befalls a citizen... Tough shit, but that's the way it is.

But there seems to be enough money to monitor a woman's pregnancy and make sure she is "fully informed" before obtaining an abortion, right?

To be fair, the PA sonogram-for-abortion bill has been put on hold...

Republicans want smaller government until it comes to women's health, then they want in our private parts.
