http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/01/world/asia/us-says-north-korea-agrees-to-curb-nuclear-work.html

"North Korea announced on Wednesday that it would suspend its nuclear weapons tests and uranium enrichment and allow international inspectors to monitor activities at its main nuclear complex. The surprise announcement raised the possibility of ending a diplomatic impasse that has allowed the country’s nuclear program to continue for years without international oversight.

The Obama administration called the steps “important, if limited.” But the announcement seemed to signal that North Korea’s new leader, Kim Jong-un, is at least willing to consider a return to negotiations and to engage with the United States, which pledged in exchange to ship tons of food aid to the isolated, impoverished nation.

A freeze on nuclear activity, if it holds, could significantly ease anxieties over North Korea’s behavior at a time when the Obama administration, in an election year, is focused on halting Iran’s nuclear program and reducing the possibility that Israel could attack Iran. The last significant effort to negotiate a dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear weapons collapsed in the waning weeks of George W. Bush’s presidency more than four years ago."

A good 1st step......well done, Mr. President

Well done, indeed. Another foreign policy success (at least the beginning of one) the cons will ignore and/or misrepresent.

And we know who's always got free samples of the hopium, too.

Deals with North Korea need to be taken with as much salt as you find on the rim of an overpriced margarita.

If diplomacy on your scale means immediate verification, then all diplomacy would be pointless.

Allowing inspectors in is an excellent step.

No, it doesn't resolve all world problems.

I agree this needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I also agree that this is a great first step. I very much would love to see NK comply with the Nuke Arms Proliferation Act. I'd also like to see the US reduce it's nuke arms total to only be able to destroy the entire planet less than twice (hey, there could be some snafu's, so think of it as insurance). I would absolutely love to see further research and development into weapons that could possibly get more and more deadly so we could reduce our warhead number that much further. Would love to see all that fissile material also be used for energy production.

I have no problem accepting NK's aborting of their nuke arms program(s). Inspectors going in is fantastic. We still have to be guarded in our response.

It's pretty much a pattern that was started by his old man. Work on nukes, rattle sabres, point out all the starving people in your country, offer to stop working on nukes if some white knight (read US) will feed his starving people.

repeat

Sad but so...I believe this is exactly the plan. This is not yet an Obama diplomatic success. But it is not a failure either. It is a necessary step, even if naïve, to convince the doubting Thomas’s of western Europe that Bush was right.

You of course have proof that there has not been an ongoing and concerted effort on the part of the State Department during the entirety of this administration to manage NK and to also engage the new leadership, that you can show us, right?
Just askin'

I am not criticizing Obama's policy…in fact a agree with it. I believe Obama, as most thinking Americans, understand the threat of North Korea and agree with Bush’s assessment just not his words he used to describe it.

I don’t believe Obama really thinks North Korea will hold up to their promises but that this step is necessary to convince the rest of the world of North Koreas deceptions.

Otherwise they cannot now say the US has not tried to find diplomatic solutions.

If Bush was right and I am not so sure how you mean that, but then in 8 years...didn't act on it. All Bush did was get taken, release $150 million (?) frozen because they were caught red-handed counterfeiting...then walk away. Didn't Bush also feed them once too ?

We simply need real action on their end of any agreement to change the bait & switch.

Otherwise politically if it was a repub, great news, with Obama eh, nothing yet...or this offer is only because of earlier repub pressure ??

I agree but each administration must make its own policy...Now we will see how North Korea keeps its promises and if not then what Obama will do about it. I personally think Obama will, as he has shown, be decisive in his response.

You cannot say Obama has been soft in these type of matters.

Good to see you separating yourself from the GOP for the sake of intellectual clarity.

Good points,MM.

Sour grapes always says something like "it doesn't resolve all problems"when the president has a success.

Can you imaging a ditsy spouse or GF chiding you every time you payed the mortgage....."well,the house isn`t payed off...whatever..." or saying that no matter how much you earned......it was never enough......?

Mature intelligent folks with their feet on the ground know that paying your mortgage is a good thing and showing up to work and earning a living tho middle-class.......is a good thing.

And even though this is just one small step....it`s a good one and in the right direction. And like making a mortgage payment is just one small step,it`s ten times better than missing a payment.

And my god......when did having hope become something to mock, especially, after what we`ve been through w/ bush,9/11,Iraq,'08',etc.......?

That`s gotta be a dark,depressing place........

Actually, what I think might be the case is that the new PM realizes something his old man didn't. That bartering with nukes and playing both sides of the coin was a shallow and ineffective means of reaching out to the world for help.
At least I hope he's smart enough to get that. And of course it's a long road out of the shitter.

I hope you are right...but we have seen in the past that a change of leadership does little to change their militaristic actions.
